The values and morals of religion, marriage, and family life in my generation have dramatically changed compared to previous generations. Most Americans do not attend church services. Divorces are more common now. Family life is completely different; women are working while men are staying home with kids. We grow and learn throughout our generations. Between generations before and the current generation there are numerous differences.
Religion was something that was taken extremely serious in previous generations. Religion was taught in schools. American families attended Sunday services every week. It was common for people to read the Bible on an everyday basis. In my generation these values have perished. Most Americans do not attend church weekly and the teaching of religion in school is not allowed in public schools. Some Americans have also chosen to believe in Atheism, the belief that there is no God. According to a poll conducted by WIN-Gallup International titled “The Global Index of Religiosity and Atheism,” said that “the number of Americans who say they are atheists rose, from 1 percent to 5 percent.” Atheism has become the new ‘trend.’
Marriage in the nineteen twenties, thirties, and forties, was something that was sacred and considered to be forever no matter what type of problems occurred. It was definitely not intended for people to get married and then six months later file for a divorce. Marriage and divorce rates have both increased in my generation. According to a report done titled, ‘Marriage: More Than a Century of Change’ “reported that fifteen percent of women in the United States are divorced, compared to one percent in nineteen twenty.”
In previous generations family life was different compared to how it is now. Men used to be the ones who went to work every day and women stayed home and watched over the children and took care of things around their home. Now and days the roles of men and women have switched in some cases. Women are the ones working, sometimes even two jobs, and men are the ones staying home taking care of house chores and watching over children.
