“To does the right thing. Atticus is
“To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is a book that takes place in an old town, Maycomb, Alabama.
It was a poor old town where it is said “people moved slowly for there was nowhere to go”, and a rather small town that was just told that “Maycomb has nothing to fear except fear itself”. There was still a racial divide, with racism and hatred of blacks all over. Based on the following lessons he teaches his kids, Atticus is a good father. He doesn’t judge people right away or jump to conclusions, always finds the good in people, respects people and does the right thing. Atticus is a fair parent who respects his children’s decisions and teaches them the following lessons which make him a great father. One thing Atticus teaches his children is to respect people despite how they might appear. One example of this is on Scout’s first day of school, Scout has a bad experience with Miss Caroline her teachers, and Atticus teaches Scout that you can’t judge a book by its cover and that you don’t understand people until you walk around in their shoes. In the book Atticus says, You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view—until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
” This contributes to Atticus being a good father because he’s teaching them to put themselves in other people’s shoes before judging them, and always find the good in people and to respect them. Another thing Atticus teaches the children is to ‘Try fighting with your head’ as to fight with words, not with fists. When Scout wants to physically fight with her classmate Cecil Jacobs because of what he said about Atticus ” defending black people”, Atticus teaches Scout to not use her fists every time someone angers her because using logic and words is more efficient.
He said to her, “Try fighting with your head for a change… it’s a good one, even if it does resist learning” This contributes to Atticus being a good father because he’s teaching the Scout the right way to deal with situations when times get tough. One more thing that Atticus teaches them is how to be courageous and what real courage is. Because of Jem’s actions make them have to go read to Mrs. Dubose, who acts kind of off. She dies and Atticus explains her strange behavior and how she is a real courageous person.
Atticus tells him “I wanted you to see something about her—I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway.” This contributes to Atticus being a good father because he’s teaching Jem to be a real courageous person and to be brave. In “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Atticus is the father of two children, Jem and Scout, Since their mother has passed away, they have a maid/caretaker Calpurnia who is African – American and has been taking care of them for years. To conclude, Atticus is a father who teaches his children life lessons, like to respect people despite appearances, use your words instead of fists, and how to be courageous which makes him a great father.
