The with the participation of citizens in
The Vietnam War was a “war between the United States and Northern Vietnam. It started November 1st 1955 and ended on April 30th 1975. It was also known as the Second Indochina War to the Vietnamese people. It was a long grueling war for both American soldiers and Vietnamese soldiers and citizens.
The question I want to answer has to do with the participation of citizens in Vietnam. The U.S. government viewed its involvement in the war as a way to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam. This was part of the domino theory of a wider containment policy, with the stated aim of stopping the spread of communism.
The tactics used by the Vietnamese people used were unfamiliar to United States soldiers because previously they had only fought in trenches or traditional fighting, they have never experienced Guerilla Warfare before. The terrain also was another hardship the US soldiers struggled to overcome. The enemy knew the terrain very well, and used this to their advantage. Vietnam is notorious for the intricate booby traps all throughout the jungle.
I want to evaluate the hardships US soldiers had when dealing with civilians. It was common for civilians to be normal by day and soldiers by night, also There was no official uniform for most of the soldiers, so the enemy could look exactly like a normal civilian they just pick up a gun and shoot. The overview of the article timelines, facts, and dates during the Vietnam War. This article is important to my research because there are multiple paragraphs about the Viet Cong and the Vietnamese military. Furthermore, the article states the role of Vietnamese citizens and Guerrilla warfare strategies during the war. One interesting aspect I found that could further my question is the struggles that both Vietnamese soldiers and United States soldiers encountered. The article goes over the importance of the conditions in vietnam and how the terrain and the vietnamese tactics led to the United States demise. This source letter was written by Ronald Ridenhour during the Vietnam War. He starts the letter by describing the conditions he was fighting in.
He begins by saying “One village area was particularly troublesome and seemed to be infested with booby traps and enemy soldiers.” He describes a first-hand account of US soldiers raid on a village in Vietnam. He said it was truly a massacre, there were ordered to kill anyone in sight, he said the one soldier shot himself in the foot to not participate in the killing. He also saw a 4 year old boy with a bullet in his arm just with a shock stucken look, and one of his comrades gunned him down dead.
This letter is evidence to show what measures the US soldiers had to go to in an attempt to stop the Viet Cong.
