The importance of social awareness (title) It is very difficult to go through life without knowledge of current events and issues. This is a cause of not being socially aware of things going on .
This will hinder the way people interact with other and relate to them. Being socially away is being able to respond and understand other in a certain situations. This knowledge allows a person to help oneself or other throughout most aspects socially.
In Fahrenheit 451 (underline that) Montag’s wife Mildred is immersed in all of the technology she has and it causes her to live a life that isn’t aware of anything but her electronics. The absent mindedness that comes with being too attached to her electronics is very dangerous for her. It causes her to have issues with her marriage. “Funny, how funny, not to remember where or when you met your husband’ wife” (Bradbury 43). This quote shows how Mildred was influenced by her decisions. This is an example of how having a bad marriage could affect you. Mildred is a prime example of how not being aware can affect ones social life and hinder others. She did this without the realization of her actions because she’s so absorbed into technology.
Another person in Fahrenheit 451 (underline that) that was not socially aware was Mrs Phelps she was one of Mildred’s emotionally distressed friends. She doesn’t really care about anything. Mrs. Phelps experienced the loss of three husbands and she isn’t really phased by their deaths. “Oh they come and go, come and go,” (Bradbury94).
Her husband went off to war and he may or may not be coming home and she doesn’t show any emotion towards the importance of his life.” Is always someone else’s husband dies, they say” (Bradbury94). She isn’t aware that people can die in wars and that it could happen to her husband. When Montag read the poem to the women Mrs Phelps was touched the most by the poem because it related so much to her life.
She cried over the poem and came to her senses about life and how walking through life with no cares or joy will affect your impressions on others. Someone else who showed lack of social awareness and civic responsibility from the novel Fahrenheit 451 (underline that) was Captain Beatty. Beatty was someone who was rebellious to the worlds rules and restrictions of reading books by reading books. He read and gained knowledge but didn’t truly understand what the books were all about. He believed books should have been destroyed even though they provided so much to the world. He also believed in keeping everyone at the same mental state by not having anyone being too smart than one another. He thinks this will make the would very chaotic due to others lack of knowledge.
His assumption has some sense behind it but he is also unaware of how much readying would affect people. Captain Beatty says, ” We stand against the small tide of those who want to make everyone unhappy with conflicting theory and thought” (Bradbury 59). This quote is saying that he doesn’t believe in the gap of knowledge that books would cause. He makes this statement looking away from the fact that the advantages of readying are much more important than the sadness to come with reading.
Some people believe social awareness is point less because no matter how much we tell someone something they’re going to find a way to make their opinion change how others think. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 an example of this was when faber spoke about books and the meaning of reading and he portrayed how people need the knowledge in books. He went away from how other though and voiced his opinion. ” it’s not books you need, it’s some of the things that once were in books” ( Bradbury 81).
He’s saying that the information in books are important not just the physical copy of the books themselves.My personal cause is the severity of texting and driving and how not being socially aware could harms others and cause major issues. Texting and driving is very dangerous and affects your driving drastically. It puts a lot of people at risks for their lives and it is prudent for people to be aware of this. “Texting and driving is dangerous – that’s a fact. More than nine in ten Americans believe sending (94%) and reading (91%) texts while driving is dangerous. There have been many efforts to educate drivers and convey the potential consequences of texting and driving using scare tactics or preachy messaging.
And, while research shows that people are convinced that the behavior is dangerous, they are still doing it”(“Texting and Driving Prevention.” ad council). “More than half (53%) of all adult cellphone owners have been on the giving or receiving end of a distraction walking encounter, according to a Pew Research study.” “Drivers in their 20s are 24 percent of the disraction drivers that were using cell phones in fatal crashes (“Texting and Driving Prevention.” Ad Council,). Not being aware of the dangers that face texting and driving could put your life and others at risk.
“To raise of this dangerous behavior, the Ad Council partnered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2012 to create a Texting and Driving Prevention campaign. The campaign shows drivers that no matter how “safety” they think they can engage in distracted driving, the behavior is always dangerous – for every driver, all the time”. This cause is important to be due to the fact I’m going to be on the road soon, and I respect people enough not to text and drive. But the dangers that come from texting cause me to be more socially aware of Texting and driving. In conclusion being socially aware makes people easier to relate to and take to because they have some idea of what is going on throughout the world. Some disadvantages of this are if people don’t value your opinion on some topics. Knowing what’s going on is something simple that will help you forever.
