7IntroductionAccording to A guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (2004), the term project and project management are different in meaning. The guide defines a project as short term undertaking to add value to either a service or a product which the outcome having positive impact on the pursuant or the target group. A guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (2004) defines Project Management on the other hand as use of skills, professions, and work tools to attain set project goals.Project Management ConceptsMartin & Tate (2001), sought to clarify the main differences between a project and a business project. In their distinction, a project has a definite time frame from commencement to termination while a business process rolls over from one process to the next indefinitely.

Similarly, a project is expected to yield a specific outcome while a business process may give the same output over the same period. Finally, whereas a project may be lacking in work instructions, a business process must have work instructions as a step for control (Martin & Tate, 2001).After gaining an insightful understanding of difference between a project and a business process, it is important to examine how project management tools and skills can be used in the operations business management process such as supply chain management. From July 2002, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOA) came into legal effect and compels management of organizations to submit their financial status by a certain deadline every year (Protiviti Inc. 2003).

Therefore, the idea of deadline supposes that organizations conforming to the SOA are actually trying to conform to a project requirement under financial management regulations. Moreover, SOA requires these organizations to exercise some degree of control, management and evaluation of the internal activities. This is also an element of project management (Protiviti Inc. 2003).The SOA requirement for control is for protecting the stakeholders’ competency at operations, adherence to legal framework and for reliability in events of financial audits.

Under the SOA, the supply chain processes will adopt agile strategies of process management so that they become relevant and competitive in future. Some of the project management techniques used today are Manufacturing Resource Planning-II, which under SOA must be financially sound and managed though out all the phases of supply chain management (Protiviti Inc. 2003).Whichever is the case, many leading international organizations have lately discovered that project management closely depends on effective team management (Singer, 2001).

  This has implications that the teams in any project need to share ideas as well as recycle their past project experience. Past experience show that most project team members, including those in virtual locations were under pressure to deliver based on their professional background passé. Singer (2001) differs with this notion and urges for creativity approaches that will leverage such projects from a global network in order to be successful in today’s challenging environment.Project team members need some mutual characteristics that will guide them smoothly though the project stages.

In terms of communication, is the project team members are at the same place and time zone, then one-on-one meetings are preferred with enriched meeting aides such as graphic to share ideas. If the members are same time but at different places, then latest communications such as videoconferences and telephones should be used to share ideas. If the members are at same places but at different times, then call centres are the best to facilitate communications. Finally, if the members are at different times and different places, e-mails may serve the best option of communications interests (Singer, 2001).ConclusionThis brief analysis of project concepts in operations management has outlined the differences between a project, project management, business process and project cycle management techniques.

This study has underscored the importance of communication in project management processes especially if they are international in scope and teams are virtually linked. This study has hinted that communication is the key to success of projects and should be managed properly with phase meeting as opposed to big bang meetings. Similarly, projects must be realistic in time, processes and outcome must be specific.
