Teaching in higher institutions is increasingly faced with challenge and need for constant improvement and development (Sammons, 2003, p387). Institutional teaching development is only achievable if the tools are subjected to continuous assessment and evaluation. This paper will analyze a teaching evaluation questionnaire with respect to the objective it is intended to achieve.The questionnaire(See Annex 1) comprises of a variety of questions that assess the various spheres of teaching employed by the teacher.
It assesses the effectiveness of content delivery by the teacher. In addition, the questionnaire undertakes an assessment of the mode of delivery employed by the teacher as well as the corresponding success associated with the delivery mode. The questionnaire likewise allows for assessment of the relevance of the content included in teaching within the higher learning institutions.The tool is useful in assessing the teachers effectiveness in content delivery and the level of understanding that the learners exhibit. The tool additionally helps the organization assess the performance of the teaching staff it employs and decide on which areas to reinforce and which require replacements.
The tool is generally used to assess the various areas of teaching that are vital for success of the same. This include the following; Instructor’s preparedness for teaching sessions, Approaches employed by the instructors in answering of questions, Materials used by the instructor in enhancing content delivery, knowledge ability and conversance of material content by the instructor, the courtesy and respect exhibited by the instructor towards the students, the accompanying environment creating by the instructor and finally this tool helps in development of recommendation with regard to the instructor and the course being assess.The tool’s effectiveness in monitor of learning within the classroom is drawn from its applicability and usage. While some evaluators use such tools as a recruitment apparatus, successful institutions constantly rely on such tools in enhancing and developing the desired improvement process amongst its staff. Through such tools the staff are ale top learn their areas of weakness, and make necessary adjustments as applicable.
Customizing the tool to suit the objective for which it is intended to serve, the organization may successfully be able to ensure that it maintains and team of highly qualified individuals in its teaching fraternity. This is in addition to ensuring that a series of bets practices and procedures are identified that effectively enhance quality development and management. However, it is worth mentioning that the effectiveness of the tool is wholly reliant on the reason for its application and consequently the level of implementation of the resulting recommendations based on the findings.In conclusion, it is important to stress that evaluation questionnaire in higher learning institutions should not be used as an elimination tool for the staff but rather should be allowed to act as a teaching development tool.
Through such the institution may be able to over time establish the best practices and conditions that foster effective student learning and understanding. This tool thus stands out as a process improvement tool that helps both teachers, students and other stakeholders in design and implementation of the curriculum. Notably too is the fact that the tool may be effectively applicable for the educators self evaluation with regard to their performance.
