Supermarket and Kroger Essay
The company I selected to analyze in terms of its management process is the Kroger Company. It is an American retail supermarket chain founded by Bernard Kroger in 1883 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Kroger’s headquarters are centralized in downtown Cincinnati, but it spans many states with store formats that include supermarkets, hypermarkets, department stores, convenience stores and mall jewelry stores. Kroger-branded grocery stores are located throughout the Midwestern and Southern United States It operates under nearly two dozen banners including Kroger, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, King Soopers, and City Market.
In 1883, Barney Kroger opened his first grocery store in downtown Cincinnati by investing his life savings of $372. He ran his business with a simple motto/mission statement: “Be particular. Never sell anything you would not want yourself” (Kroger Website). Many aspects of the company’s business today are based on Barney Kroger’s early efforts to serve his customers. The Kroger Company has a strategic management and planning style as well as a Customer 1st mission.
The company’s formal mission/vision statement states, “Our mission is to be a leader in the distribution and merchandise of food, pharmacy, health, and personal care items, seasonal merchandise, and related products and services” (Kroger Supermarkets). To accomplish its mission, Kroger management implements six values that provide guidance to employees about how they should act at work every day. The first value Kroger implements is honesty in the workplace: doing the right thing and telling the truth.
The benefits of this may include being an effective worker and a good team player. The second value implemented by Kroger management is integrity, which is a broader concept than honest. “Living our values in all we do, a unified approach to how we do business and treat each other. ” Management also values respect for others, which includes valuing the opinions, property, and perspectives of others. The Kroger Company also values diversity. It wants a workplace that includes a variety of people from different backgrounds, cultures, opinions, and thoughts.
The fifth value implemented by Kroger management is safety: watching out for others and being secure and safe in your workplace. Finally, Kroger values inclusion in the workplace. “Your voice matters, working together works, encouraging everyone’s involvement, being the best person you can be” (Kroger Website). The main goal of the Kroger Company is to build strong local ties and brand loyalty with its customers. I worked at a Kroger when I was in high school and I learned that the company builds customer loyalty through the use of Kroger Plus Cards.
If you do any shopping at Kroger, the Kroger Plus card is definitely a must-have. It is a loyalty card that provides you with discounted prices at check-out and other benefits such as coupons and discounted gas prices at certain locations. The fact that signing up for a Kroger Plus Card is a short and easy process definitely influences customer loyalty. It is a short form to fill out and it is completely free. Kroger recently selected Oracle’s Agile Product Lifecycle Management for Process to establish a foundation for continually improving the customer experience.
Kroger is implementing the Oracle systems as a part of its strategic initiative (the customer 1st mission) in which the company is transforming business operations to improve the customer experience and deliver the highest quality products and services (Hartquist). Product Lifestyle Management has become a strategic solution for retailers and process manufacturers as they seek to accelerate product innovation and improve product quality, compliance and traceability.
