Student’s nameProfessorSubjectDateEthical aspects of cloning The moral issues of cloning mainly focus on human cloning though some individuals have explored some ethical issues in animal cloning. It is essential to understand that cloning in itself is the process of generating genetically indistinguishable copies of the biological material. To understand the fundamental ethical aspects of cloning one need to recognize the three types of cloning which include molecular cloning, Organism or reproductive cloning and therapeutic cloning. One critical difference that needs to be noted when studying ethical issues of cloning is the distinction between these types of cloning. Molecular or gene cloning aims at creating undistinguishable copies of DNA genes in chromosomes, Organism cloning, on the other hand, focuses on creating an identical copy of the whole organism.
Lastly, therapeutic cloning includes cloning of human embryos for the creation of stem cells. The stem cells help in disease treatment, and in this process, embryos get destroyed. (Regina Bailey)Cloning techniques are used to produce offsprings that are genetically indistinguishable to the parent donor. Cloning in adult animals succeeds through the transfer of somatic cells.
In this way, the nucleus from a somatic cell is taken out and put in an egg cell having it’s nuclear removed. The main ethical problem of this process is that they come in tiny percentage. Most of the time, the cloned animals that live tend to various health problems and shorter life expectancy. About Genetic Learning center, cloning breeds only 0.1 to 3.0 percent success rate.
(Robinson)Animal cloning seems to poses some potentially positive results besides their negative health deterioration fore mentioned. The scientist tries to produce transgenic pigs which pose human genes. Their heart, liver or kidneys are vital for an organ transplant in humans, and for sure this saves many lives as thousands of sick people die every year following delays human organ donations. Once the cloning is successful transgenic animals can as well be cloned to give rise to many organs needed for human organ transplants. This experience achieved in cloning impacts knowledge and understanding of genetics for those doing it. Genetically altered animals can also produce human hormones or proteins in its milk.
The Proteins or hormones produced can be separated from the fluid and used in human treatments. However, when these genetically altered animals are allowed to mate they produce offsprings with no human inserted genes thus do not offer medication.(Ethics of cloning) Just like in animal cloning, human cloning produces positive results and is moral. It brings understanding on the various causes of miscarriages and thus reduces spontaneous abortions hence an immense advantage to ladies who can’t carry a fetus to term. Cloning helps to avoid division of human ovum which is a technique to thwart the growth of cancer. Embryo cloning also allows parents who have the risk of transferring genetic defect to their offsprings.
In as much as human cloning is useful, it has some side effects. Screening tests show that cloning eradicates zygotes of specific gender and orientation. It also stimulates the possibility of destroying embryos. (Ethics of cloning)In conclusion, cloning in both humans and animals can results in excellent results when used well. It breads hope where there was no hope.ReferenceBailey, Regina. “All About Cloning.
