Duck for President This book focuses on the voting process as well as the job duties of the president of the United States. It focuses on the colors red, white and blue throughout the book and can support the fine arts in this way. After reading the book, first grade students can create presidential campaign posters that use red, white and blue to show the importance of voting and being president. This book can also promote patriotism and responsible citizenship by teaching the symbolic importance of red, white and blue to United States citizens. An extension activity can include color mixing or the importance of different colors to different people.I Pledge Allegiance This book divides each phrase in the Pledge of Allegiance up in order to teach students about its meaning. It also teaches students about the importance of the Pledge of Allegiance for citizens of the United States and uses a variety of patriotic symbols as a fine arts connection. After reading the book students can create their own patriotic symbols that portray what being a good citizen means to them.
These symbols can be accompanied with explanations that outline why students chose their particular symbol to represent their allegiance to the United States. An extension activity can include requiring students to create their own flag to show the importance of the United States.Our 50 States: A Family Adventure Across America This books centers on a comprehensive tour of the United States and teaches students about important historical components of each state and why each event is important to United States history. The book also shows students important resources and landmarks associated with each state.
After reading the book, students can be encouraged to choose their favorite state from the book and create a postcard they might mail to a family or friend. This connects the story with the fine arts by allowing students to create visual representations of United States history. It also requires that they apply artistic concepts to historical events and places. An extension activity can include creating a tourist guidebook for a specific location from the story that includes artistic representations of important historical events.Our White House, Looking In, Looking Out This book includes one hundred eight representations of the White House including art, poetry and fiction.
Each of the representations offers a different perspective of how the White House is viewed. After reading the poetry and short stories and viewing the art, students can create their own visual representations of the White House to connect this book with fine arts. Students can get ideas from the book as well as their own knowledge of the White House to create visual art pieces that show their own perspectives of what the White House looks like on the outside as well as on the inside. Students can be encouraged to include such artistic elements such as color and symbols to adequately display their own perspective.
