Communication and language: Children listen and pay close attention in different situations e. g. istening to a story being told and remembering main parts and react with appropriate questions and/or actions, also being able to pay full attention to someone whilst doing something else and being able to respond in the correct way, they are able to follow direction with a few ideas/actions and being able to answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions about different events and things experienced, also they are able to speak accurately when speaking about past, present and the future allowing them to express themselves effectively being aware of listeners needs.Physical development: Being able to move and handle things with good control and co-ordination in small and big movements being confident in different ways and having a safe awareness of space. Also managing tools efficiently including equipment for writing, children knowing how important it is to have good health and self-hygiene understanding the importance of exercise and healthy food, also being able to dress themselves and use the toilet on their own and basic washing.Personal social and emotional development: Children will have the confidence to try new activities, and will say what activities they like the most, they can be confident in a familiar group and speak out about their ideas and will choose the equipment they need for their chosen activity and will ask for help confidently if they need it.Children will speak about how they show feelings and others, they will also speak out about behaviour of themselves and of others and consequences and will also know that some behaviour is not acceptable, they will follow and understand rules and work as part of a group, also adjust their behaviour in a situation and adjust to changes of routine with ease. Children will take it in turns with each other and take into account of each other’s ideas of how to set their activity and will also be sensitive to others feelings and their needs which will help towards positive relationships with other children and adults.
Specific areas Literacy: children will understand when reading simple sentences, they sound out regular words using phonic knowledge and can also read common irregular words. They can show understanding when talking about what they have read. They also use their phonic knowledge to write words that match their spoken sounds and can also sound out and write some irregular words, they can write some simple sentences that they and others can read.
Some of the words will be phonetically plausible whilst others will be spelt correctly.Mathematics: Children can count numbers 1-20 placing them in order saying which number is one more or one less than the number given. Using different objects of different quantities they can add and subtract two single digit numbers and can count back to find the answers. They can solve problems halving, sharing and doubling, children will talk about solving problems with use of everyday language discussing size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare and solve problems.
They use everyday objects and shapes and will use mathematical language to describe them. Understanding the world: Children will talk about events of past and present of their lives and family members, they know that other children may not like the same things as them and they will be sensitive towards this, they also know that things can be similar between them and others including families, different communities and traditions.Children know that there are differences and some similarities with places, objects, materials and living things and will talk about their own environment and how their environment may differ to another; making observations they will explain why things change and why some things may occur. They will recognise that a range of different technology is used in schools, home, etc… and will use technology for particular purposes.Expressive arts and design: Children will sing songs, make music and dance and will also experiment in ways to change them for themselves, they will safely use different materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with design, texture, colours, form and function. Children will use their imagination using what they have learnt about materials and media carefully thinking about their uses and purposes, they represent using their own ideas, feelings and thoughts through arts, music, dance and role play also stories.
Without the prime areas the specific areas would not work because we use the prime areas build communication, physical and personal, social and emotional development to encourage specific areas to grow giving children bigger opportunities to develop and by using both areas as a guide it allows practitioners to use their best judgements as to whether a child is showing typical development for their age or if they may be at risk of delay or even ahead for their age. This also supports information sharing between parents, colleagues and other settings.
