Do you hear it? It becomes louder… Are you deaf? Or you’re not paying attention… Do you see it? It’s coming; well actually it is there… Are you blind? Or you’re not paying attention… Do you feel it? It’s actually on our skin… Are you numb? Or you’re not paying attention… Do you smell that? There’s a blood, I hunger for that. I know you too… It was on 1960s, when the Philippines was one of the elite countries who was among the so-called “tiger economies”.
This was the time when our country is at the peak of economic growth, just next to Japan. 1970, countries like South Korea and Taiwan overtook us. On the succeeding decades, it was the turn of our neighbors like China, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Hongkong to unleash their economic growth. Now, what happened to Juan Dela Cruz?
It is evident that the deteriorating economic performance is due to the corruption in the government which leads to lack of confidence by the foreign investors, economic reforms will be slowed because those who are in the position will think of themselves first rather than servicing those people who put them where they are at, trade and industry will be disorder, the ratio between import and export is unbalanced, we spend too much on importing goods rather than producing our own, why? Because if the government buys, surely there is a budget and this is how the criminal mind works and operates.
Just like a student in PUP who asks for their parents to give him 1500php although the actual tuition fee is just 1000php. Simple and basic, just like that, lie, cheat and steal. The saddest part of the drama is, illegal things seemed to be systematized or should I say, culturalized. The act of stealing looks normal, they know that there is a thief but instead of cutting their hands, some joined them while those who are more intelligent, steal what the thief have. Indeed, it is funny in the Philippines. Do you still believe that the Philippine will be a tiger economy? Surely, I do.
It is hopeless when you think it is. Today, foreign countries eye our leader President Aquino as a positive factor to invest here in the Philippines because of his promise to rebuke corruption. Next, we Filipinos are hardworking, talented, and skilled not just as employees but also as entrepreneurs. I believe that we have the most creative mind, if some of our fellowmen are creative in stealing, then of course they can be creative in empowering themselves in a legal way. Another, we have this fast growing fast food chain which is now stepping its way into the global scene.
Optimism is the strategy we should play; it all starts in our minds, within ourselves. There’s no way left on us but to go up. And currently a good news was written, according to Wall Street Journal, we are one of these countries that can be withstand with the European economic fall as we have a strong government balance sheet, robust domestic economy and high enough foreign reserve. A threat turned into opportunity, just like what we did back 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, which were the post World War II eras. We all know that it is a long way to go.
As a student, we should put in our mind that our country needs us. We are the next in line. We should respond to challenge of being a righteous and just professionals, CPAs I should say. Where accounts are balanced and income and expenses are justified. We are a country that perseveres too much. We persists so much difficulties. It is good to persevere, but it is unhealthy if we are used to. I don’t say to hold back, but to take the lead. Enough of being deaf, the growl of the tiger is howling in the air. Let the rage of Filipino’s bayanihan be heard.
Enough of being blind. Let our nation stare fiercely to the world. Show them the fire of Ningas Kugon burn in our eyes infinitely. Enough of being numb, respond to challenge, and don’t feel like the talangka is climbing at each other, they are actually helping each other to escape the basket that prisons them. We all are hungry to change our country. I know we all are aware that change starts from ourselves, but that awareness is nothing if we don’t act and respond. Let the blood be shed, may the new blood of our generation brings glory to our Nation. Each of us is tiger.
