Oil is a natural gas made out of petroleum. Petroleum comes out of the ground as a liquid. Aristotle is an ancient Greek philosopher who taught that everything we touch or feel is made up of the base elements of earth. (Mike, 2017) In 1991, the worst oil spill happened. They called it the Gulf war oil spill. In the Persian Ocean a fire started on the boat, causing about 8 million barrels of oil to spew out. (Melina, 2010) There are two different ways on how oil spills can harm the wildlife. One is from the oil itself and from the response or cleanup operations.

Oil spills are very harmful to the animals because of its chemical constituents are poisonous. (N.d, 2017) When there are different types of oil spills the kind of oil does matter. Some also behave differently Some oils have more chemicals and can be extremely harmful. (N.d, 2017) Gas prices spike up $1 per gallon in the United States this year. Scientists are predicting that the use of our oil is near.

Scientists still don’t know where oil comes from, how long oil took to make, or how long it will last. (Than, 2005)Oil works by dead organic material that accumulates on the bottom of oceans, riverbeds, or swamps. Over time, more and more of this adds up and it starts turning into a black and waxy substance called Kerogen. Kerogen is a complex fossilized material that is found in oil.

(Than, 2005) Abiogenic sources have been found for oil. It was first imposed by a russian scientists nearly 250 years ago. (Than, 2005) Throughout the years, energy has been a key enabler to our standards of living.

At the beginning of the 18th century the first modern steam engine was made.  In the 1850’s 70% of coal was being used as well as about 19% of wood. (William, 2017) 8% of water and other elements were being used.

In the 1900’s the amount of coal went up and wood went down. 67% of coal was being used and 28% of wood was only being used. (William, 2017) Around 1920 less water and other elements was being used. In 1950, only 3% of wood was being used and 50% of coal was being used. People were starting to drive cars and using about 49% of gas and oil. (William, 2017) In the 2000’s wood started to become used a little more and gas and oil was being used a lot more.  Especially in cars.

22% of wood was being used, about 62% of gas and oil is being used, 9% of Nuclear was being used, and 7% of water and other elements were being used. (William, 2017) Oil was first discovered in 600 B.C. by the Chinese. They were transported through pipelines that are made through bamboo.  Oil is and was much more flexible and adaptable than coal.

(William, 2017) An officer named Drake Herald discovered oil in Pennsylvania in 1859. He also made the discovery in Texas in 1901. This set a stage for the new oil economy. (William, 2017) John.

D. Rockefeller began starting his career on refining.  In 1865, he formed his own standard oil company.  When Rockefeller was building in the U.S., the Nobel and Rothschild families were competing for control of Russia’s oil riches. (William, 2017) Oil is formed over millions of years.

It is held in tiny spaces in underground rocks. Some rocks have tiny spaces called pores. (N.d, resource school science) There has been thousands of oil spills occur in the U.

S. waters, each year, but most are small sizes. They spill less than one barrel. In Santa Barbara, California, in 1969, there have been at least 44 oil spills, each over 10,000 barrels (420,000 gallons) have affected the U.S. waters. (N.

d, Response restoration)  The largest oil spill to ever affect the U.S. water really bad was the 2010 deepwater horizon well blowout in the Gulf of Mexico. All of the oil spills are from the NOAA’s office of response and restoration. They come from the records and information from the Emergency Response Division.  (N.d, Response restoration)The deepwater horizon in 2010 spilled 205.8 million gallons of oil and 225,000 tons of methane into the Gulf of Mexico.

The number of birds, sea turtles, dolphins, and other animals sickened or killed, tallied as part of the government’s official count said. The toll on wildlife animals continue to toll due to some minor oil spills. (N.d, 12 12)  More than 82,000 birds may have been harmed by the oil spill. Approximately 6,000 sea turtles were killed during the spill.  As many as 25,900 marine mammals may have been harmed during the spill.

(N.d, 12 12) According to the AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) important factors related to impacts of an oil spill on wildlife. The spread of the oil, the type of oil spilled, the location of the spill, the area of the sea, the sensitivity of the environment, number of habitats impacted, the timing of the incident, the nature or the toxicity, and/or the variety of many different species. All of these are a list of things that cause harmful oil spill in the wildfires. (N.

d, wildlife)Birds and many animals ingest the oil when they try to clean themselves. The water of repellency of a bird’s feathers exposing creatures to harsh elements. Fish and shellfish may not be exposed to these harsh elements immediately.  (U.S.

2004) Oil is extremely toxic to all wildlife. It mostly occurs in the marine life. As soon as the oil hits the ocean the effects are severely effective. (Fisher, 2016)
