Military identification Essay

Introduction. This paper is a study of the military identification card. The paper seeks to explore the various uses of military identification card, the loss of the identification card and the fraudulent incidences involving the use of military identification cards.Due to the privileges associated with military identification cards, thieves and conmen have developed ways of accessing these privileges without the consent of the military personnel or their beneficiaries. This shortfall is majorly blamed on the weaknesses.

By using the same number as the one approved for the military personnel, one is able to access the victim’s account and spend on buying crs,  open credit card accounts, checking accounts, and  carelessly get credit from a number of stores to the detriment of the victim. Some conmen have also taken advantage of families of the soldiers who have gone to war away from home. They do this by masquerading as Red Cross officials who are attending to their injured family member in a bid to coerce the family of the purported injured soldier to reveal his or her identification number. (Angela Bennet, 2005).According to US Federal Register Division (2002), military identification card is issued by the Department of Defense granting the holder the right to enjoy Uniformed Services benefits and privileges. This issuance of Identification cards is done using the Real Time Automated Personnel Identification System (RAPIDS).  Only provided to legitimate parties. These include active duty personnel, active duty family members, military retirees and their family members are all eligible for military ID cards.

Family members and eligible dependents are issued with appropriate ID card at the Real Time Automated Personnel Identification System Card issuing site. The active duty family members and military retirees and their dependents are issued with a tan colored ID card giving them the privileges to access commissary exchange, welfare and recreational facilities.  In the military, anyone seeking military service provision must identify themselves as bonafide beneficiaries. The military ID card serves as a gate pass to accessing a number of benefits including going to the commissary, accessing child care, getting health care or even getting on base.

(Angela Bennet, 2005). The family members of military personnel and other dependants are provided with a tan colored DD form 1173-1, guard and reserve dependent ID card. These cards however do not fully qualify holders to enjoy access to exchange and certain morale, welfare and recreation privileges. However, access to medical benefits and commissary privileges requires that these Cards be accompanied by a service member’s orders allowing these privileges. (US Federal Register Division, 2002)The red Identification Card serves as proof that individuals have been pre-enrolled in the Defense Eligibility Enrollment System. This is an important first step in obtaining family member and dependent medical treatment when the service member is called to active duty for 31 consecutive days or more.

Therefore, a service member should process an Application for Uniformed Services Identification Card and tan colored DD form 1173-1. The documents provide a go a head for the family members and other dependants to enjoy military privileges for the period specified by member’s orders.Conclusion.

Military identification card is a property of the Department of Defence that is issued to service members, their families and other dependants. The identification card gives access to various privileges by the qualified groups. However, the identification card numbers are not very safe from thieves and conmen who use them to get the same benefits.Work Cited.
