Media Ethics In the span of communication, effective communication is important in affecting public point of view. Before exploring more about Media Ethics in Islam one should have a clear knowledge about Media and Ethics. How can they be related to each other in the knowledge of Islam? Media is now a day’s fundamental channel of communication all around the world in form of broadcasting and narrowcasting which included television, newspapers, internet, and communication through a telephone. Ethics or Moral Philosophy is moral principles dealing with good and bad moral duty of an individual behavior, which is based on the activity which is conducted by the particular group, culture, and etc. Media EthicsWhen we combine these two subdivisions we have a mixture of principles and standards. A definition that can be formed with these mixtures is as follows, Media ethics is the subdivision of applied ethics dealing with the specific ethical principles and standards of media, including broadcast media, film, theatre, arts, print media and the internet.i Ethics is important in media because it creates a guideline for the journalists to remain within the limits. Professional responsibility, legal responsibility, social responsibility should be the main priorities for any type of media organization. Media ethics are also trending an important role in the society. People are getting more aware why it is important and how it is affecting the culture and the religion, because what you see is what you adapt. So it’s very important how it is taken care in this global village era, where everything is available at the touch of the finger. Media Ethics in IslamLuckily Allah Almighty has provided moral guidelines in the perspective of media ethics in the Holy Quran. All the set of instructions are provided in Holy Quran in understanding difference between right and wrong. If a Muslim act against the teachings of Islam it considers as a wrong act. The way Muslims are sketched in the media is a very debatable issue. Muslim Umma is facing many social, financial, scientific and educational problems, which make them depended on western countries. Muslims should be more focused on Islamic perspective of communication in the light of Quran and Hadith. After Umma now Muslims are responsible to fight against the evil way of communication. Islam gives complete right to express things, its responsibility of media to give correct information to people to give true image of Islam and Muslims. Western media promotes unfaithfulness and vulgarity which is totally against from Islamic concept. Islam is the religion of peace and faithfulness and affection in society. Islam give high honor to women and its clear stated in Holy Quran to be treated equally, where western media portrait a different image of women. Many media channels broadcast news without any confirmation; they print fake news which is strictly prohibited by Islam. Allah Almighty says in Quran: “O, you who believe, if a wicked person comes to you with any news, ascertain the truth, lest you harm people unwillingly and afterwards become full of repentance for what you have done” (Al-Hujrat: 6). Religious debates are not forbidden in Islam, but Islam suggests that conversation should be done in a good manner through arguments. Allah Almighty says in Quran” Let there arise a band of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong” (Aal-iImran: 104) In the same Surah, Allah again says: “You are the best people, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah” (Aal-iImran: 110). Promoting right things and eliminating evil things is the basic concept of communication in Islam. Responsibility comes to communication media to deliver good deed and remove evil from the society.Allah has said in Surat Al Hajj: “(They are) those who, if we establish them in the land, establish regular prayer and give regular charity, enjoin the right and forbid wrong” (Al Hajj: 41).People who don’t believe in the ethics and uprightness of communication and encourage misinterpretation about Islam are totally false. The news of a journalist is actually a witness, whose stealing from the public is a sin. Allah says: “And do not conceal evidence; for whoever conceals it, his heart is tainted with sin. And Allah knows all that you do.” (AlBakra: 283). Allah has further said: “And cover not Truth with falsehood, nor conceal the Truth, when you know (what it is)” (Al Bakra: 42). Another important aspect of the Islamic concept of communication is that wisdom and sanity have special importance in communication. Here are few things to keep in communication with respect to ethics in Islam. · No commutation media has right to interfere in personal lives of the people. Islam secured the private lives of Muslims.· Scandals of women should not be highlighted in media; there should be special care in matters regarding women.· Allah Almighty has made compulsory to respect all human, using bad names for each other is forbidden in Holy Quran.· Backbiting is prohibited in Islam; one should not be accused without any solid proof.· Exaggeration is also forbidden from Quranic teachings. New should not be broadcast without any research and proof.· Media in Islam should promote good deeds and stop evil deeds getting published to peoples.· Decent conversation, essays, columns, and analysis should be telecast on news channels, love and brotherhood should be spread. The biggest reason for separation of Umma is backwardness in communication and media. It is the duty of Muslims countries to pay special attention on Media Ethics which is should be followed according to the teaching of Islam. People can’t stay away from mass communication it is the biggest source of change in society. It is also the responsibility of Muslim media to follow Islamic concept of communication to portray the real image of Islam before the world.
