Massachusetts Senate Race: Warren vs. Brown Essay

There is a current US Senate race in Massachusetts between incumbent Republican US Senator Scott Brown and Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren. This election will run concurrently with the US Presidential race with voting taking place on November 6, 2012. The race appears to be able to go either way with neither candidate having a big lead over the other. The election is truly a toss-up but if I had to predict one person to win, I would say Elizabeth Warren; however, I say that with reserve because I think that Scott Brown has an equally decent chance of being re-elected.After the death of Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy in August 2009, Senator Scott Brown was elected to office after a special election was held. It is interesting to note that Ted Kennedy was also elected to the position via a special election after his brother John F.

Kennedy became President of the US in 1962. Brown is now running for re-election. Brown is originally from Massachusetts having served on the Massachusetts General Court, State House of Representatives and the State Senate in his years before becoming a Senator.He is an attorney having graduated from Boston College School of Law specializing in Real Estate. During his time as a Senator he has supported abortion and a woman’s right to choose, for the most part.

He was the very first Senator to ask for Todd Akin to drop out of the Missouri US Senate race for his “legitimate rape” comments and he also took a stance against the anti-gay marriage opinions of Chick-fil-A President Dan T. Cathy. As a registered voter in Massachusetts, it does not surprise me that he has taken supported gay rights and abortion rights.To be elected as a Senator in a state like Massachusetts as a Republican is no easy task. I consider my state to be on the liberal end especially having being the first state to legalize gay marriage.

Brown is considered to be a moderate Republican. Elizabeth Warren is a Harvard law school professor who is originally from Oklahoma. She has quite a few honorable accomplishments including being a Special Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under President Obama. She was also recognized by the Time 100 as an increasingly influential public policy figure.
