Major and Career Research Project Essay
Biology is under the college of Arts and Sciences and is categorized in the Biological Sciences department. The main chair/director is Dr.
Sam Atkinson with an assistant, Kendra Donahue. The Biological Science department is located in the Biology Building 210. There are numerous courses that have to be taken in order to major in Biology; while also minoring in Chemistry as well. There are introductory classes that need to be taken like: “Introductory Biology: Comparative Physiology” or “Introductory Biology: Cell and Development Biology.
” Also “General Chemistry” for two semesters with “Organic Chemistry. One semester of calculus is needed with a second semester of calculus or an equivalent of statistics. Physics is also necessary in order to complete the major of Biology; two semesters of “General Physics I and II. ” And finally there needs to be Biochemistry courses taken, such as “Principles of Biochemistry, Individualized Instructions.
” Majoring in Biology would grant me various skills in knowing how the world we live in is made up of and how we live as human beings on this Earth. I believe Biology is the most knowledgeable area of study because it teaches how certain things work and what they are made up of.There are numerous career opportunities in Biology, including field work and research as well.
Neuroscience is an example of a career which has to do with additional emphasis on Physiology. This major fits with my personality because I enjoy learning how things are made up of and how they work. And I’ve been interested in how the brain functions; therefore going into Neuroscience would be beneficial to me. The main advantages in this major are that I would enjoy it and find myself in a good career when I graduate. The disadvantages would be that it would take me some time to complete my ourses and it will be rigorous. Mechanical Engineering Mechanical Engineering is in the College of Engineering, and the certain field of engineering I’m interested in is in the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering. The Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering is Yong Tao; who is located on North Elm Street in room F101A. Some of the basic courses needed to complete a BS in Mechanical Engineering are “Principles of Biology,” “General College Chemistry,” and “Principles of Physics 2 or 3.
” Also there needs to be a year of math usually involving Calculus.Along the way are courses involving engineering with mechanicals like: “Engineering Mechanics—Statics” or “Engineer Graphics—Principles and Applications. ” The skills that can come from majoring in Mechanical Engineering are physical and also mental. It brings a lot of knowledge with skill in using your own hands to create something. I feel that this fits with my personality because I like working with my hands and creating new things that I enjoy.
Some advantages in Mechanical Engineering would be that I could create and form new ideas and machinery for the world that I think is beneficial.The disadvantages are thinking up those ideas because sometimes I cannot be as creative as I’d like to be. Many career opportunities with a Mechanical Engineer major involve automotive engineering and even aerospace engineering. Sometimes mechanical engineers are concerned with the principles of force, energy and motion. They are not only the people who create the products but also designed them to begin with. There are several samples of related occupations: Material Scientist, Mechanical Research Engineer, Plant Engineer, Biomedical Engineer and so on.
Mechanical engineer can go into many different parts of fields involving other different majors and areas of study. Neuroscientist A neuroscientist is trained in researching the structure and function of the brain and nervous system. They have to specialize in cell chemistry and biology, brain anatomy, cognition, genetics, or experimental psychology.
Many neuroscientists use number of tools in order to learn about the brain, nervous system, and behavioral patterns. They mainly use computers in order to interpret results from studies they find.Neuroscientists collaborate with one another in order to conduct sensitive, complicated studies. They work together to design materials, apply for grants ,acquire new materials, and even recruit volunteer test subject. I think this type of work would interest me and I would be able to accomplish these things. I find interest in the brain and how it functions; therefore researching the brain and its functions would interest me the most.
In order to become a neuroscientist an individual is required to obtain a PhD and complete up to two years of postdoctoral training.Most scientists complete a four-year bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or psychology, along with four- or five-year doctoral programs in cognitive, biological, or molecular neuroscience. Graduates usually obtain postdoctoral fellowships at universities, private research institutions or pharmaceutical companies, where they work alongside experience neuroscientists.
I feel that this occupation would fit my personality because I want to learn how the brain functions and experience researching new things about the brain and behavioral patterns of people.I find that to be one of the biggest advantages to working as a neuroscientist. A disadvantage would be that it would take a lot of time and effort staying in school as long as it is required to become neuroscientists.
Automotive Engineer An automotive engineer can be involved in almost any aspect of the production of automobiles. Most engineers specialize in a particular area, but contribute to all stages of development. These mostly include design of the auto body as well as improvement and changes in the chassis, engine and operating systems.Since there are many areas in automotive engineering people specialize in certain areas of their choice. Some specialties include thermodynamics and aerodynamics and electronics. Other areas that are commonly specialized are control systems, fuel technologies and emissions, and fluid mechanics.
I think that this would fit my personality because I enjoy working with my hands and building things. As an automotive engineer I can design new products while being involved with the development of that product. Also I have a fair amount of interest in automotives because I’ve made customizations to my own car myself.A successful automotive engineer is required to have technical expertise as well as excellent communication skills. They must be able to clearly share their ideas with colleagues and communicate the details of their thoughts to technical personnel. In order to contribute with their ideas and designs they must people to fully understand their ideas and share them to others for them to understand as well as they do.
To become an automotive engineer it requires a minimum bachelor’s degree in engineering and advanced degrees in mechanical engineering.Many automotive engineers enter their fields at the bottom and reach to the top through promotions with on-the-job experience. The advantage to working as an automotive engineer is that it doesn’t require a lot of school time and that it’s something I might enjoy doing. The disadvantages are that I have poor skills in communication and confrontations; this would conflict with presenting my ideas to colleague and having my thoughts understood.Citations.”Find People or Departments. ” UNT .
