When in a separate class, such learners appear to have an enhanced self-conceptthan in regular classrooms possibly because the competition in a regular class establishesthe criteria for achievement higher than the level that these learners canmeet. With its lower teacher-pupil ratio, this setting offers more intensiveindividualized instruction in which learners spend more time learning and henceare able to make greater strides in both academic and social areas (Smith,1991).The teachers often find one or more of the saidclassification in their classrooms.
