Jesus comes into the world: The Word according to Apostle Luke and Muhammad Essay
The coming of Jesus into the world was written and interpreted in different generations and languages.
Two of the most prominent versions, however, were the ones written by Apostle Luke and Muhammad, which can be read in the Bible and in the Qur’an.SIMILARITIES. There are three similarities that are evident in the two versions of Luke and Muhammad: First of all, both versions relate that Jesus is not an ordinary man. Luke tells us that He is the Son of the Most High, while Muhammad tells us that He has a special relationship to the spirit (Luke 1:29-33, Qur’an Sura 19:16-27). Second is that both scriptures picture Mary as truly humble and obedient to the Lord, considering her answers to the angel.
Third and last is that, both proclaims that Jesus would possess great earthly powers in the time to come—either in the form of earthly kingship or by supernatural powers.DIFFERENCES. However, when it comes to differences, the following are basically evident in the two versions: First of all, Muhammad wrote that Jesus is merely like Adam… not the Son of God but a prophet who can perform miracles. Second, unlike the way Luke narrated his version, Muhammad points out the ‘femaleness’ of Mary, probably because the culture of Makkah perceives females as way down below the level of the males. Third, also in the version of Muhammad, Mary replies that she owes her gratitude to the angel and not to the Lord (Sura 19:16-27). This may reflect the cultural implication that women are less wise and have a tendency to misunderstand things.
Although in Luke’s version, Mary asks the same question, yet the scriptures of Muhammad declares that Mary was close to illiterate—not able to understand what and why things were happening that way. In the latter portion of Muhammad’s writings, in fact, Mary mumbles a curse during one of her birth pangs. She was pictured more—not as a holy, unblemished servant of the Lord—but as a human being who was weak in faith, in trust, and in wisdom. Fourth and final, the version of Muhammad contains additional episodes, such as the appearance of ripe dates. The Jewish goes for the sanctity of the episode; Islam, on the other hand, would rather focus on the morality of men.Appendix:MARYAM, ‘ISA (JESUS), AND THE SPIRIT (19:16-27)Jesus, along with Muhammad, is singled out in the Qur’an for his special relationship to the spirit (r?h?). Like Adam, he was brought to life directly through “inspiriting,” that is, the deity’s breathing into him of the spirit.
He can perform miracles, such as bringing a bird back to life, and is thereby associated also with the life-force itself. The passage selected below shows how Jesus’ very conception was through the spirit. It also gives one of the more dramatic and beloved discussions of a female figure in the Qur’an, a figure who was to become a paradigm for female Sufi saints such as Rabi’a.In the passage, the spirit comes to Maryam in the form of a bashar (human being).
Though the term bashar is not gender-specific, Maryam acts as if it were a male she was confronting.And recall in the book Maryam, when she withdrew from her people to a place facing the EastAnd veiled herself from them. We sent her our spirit which took on the likeness of a fully formed human being.She said: I take refuge in the Compassionate from you. Would that your intentions were pure!He said: I am only a messenger from your lord, sent to bestow upon you a son without blemish.She said: How can I have a son when no person has touched me and I have not been unchaste?He said: So it is! Your lord said: for me it is easy! We will make it a sign for humankind and a mercy from us—and the matter was decreed.
She conceived him and withdrew to a distant place.The birth pangs drove her to the trunk of a date palm. She said: I wish I were dead and forgotten!A voice called to her from below: Don’t grieve.
Your lord has placed a stream below you.Sway the tree trunk toward you and ripe dates will shower down around.Eat and drink and be comforted. If you meet any human, say: I have consecrated a fast to the compassionate and cannot speak today to any human being.She carried him forth to her people. Oh, how happy is the woman who believes in God, for he does make his promises to her come true.

For he has deigned to notice me, his humble servant and, after this, all the people who ever shall be will call me the happiest of women!
