Is Higher Education Worth the Cost? Essay

Americans today tend to believe that college education is not an option but more so a necessity.

“Why are so many parents trying to encourage their kids to attend college”? Is it because they are trying to control their lives? Or maybe it’s because they are just awful parents? I say that it’s completely the opposite of that. Parents just want what’s best for their kids; they don’t want them to have to fight the struggle of the daily grind. Nobody wants that life!Although a college education could be costly, it is worth the cost because it can help young African American males find a career instead of a job, and it could be beneficial to their child’s life. One source talks about how much College tuition has tripled since the 1980s. This called for the rise of a lot of student loan debts.

Due to finical reasons majority of people are not worried about attending college. Others think that there is no need to go, and the rest said that they just can afford it. From the same source someone stated that the only thing that’s more expensive than getting an education is not getting an education.I read from another source that with a high school diploma, there is a very low chance of finding a career and a job with high earnings. One reason why I believe that higher education is worth the price is because it can help you find a career and instead of a job.

For example, according to statistics from the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics(“Job outlook for college graduates”(3) constantly shows that workers who have a bachelor’s or graduates degree have higher earnings and lower unemployment than workers who have less education.Between 2004 and 2012, more than 14 million job openings are projected to be filled by workers who have a degree.

A college degree makes it easier to enter many of the fastest growing, highest paying occupations (job outlook for college graduates (2). I believe that the bureau of Labor Statistics wants people to understand that the people without a graduate degree will either get stuck with a low paying job or no job at all. Another reason why I believe higher education is worth the price is because it can be very beneficial to your child’s life as well as yours. For instance, a report published by the Carnegie foundation, non- monetary individuals benefits of higher education include the tendency for post-secondary students to become more open minded, more cultured, more rational, consistent and less authoritarian; those benefits are passed along to succeeding generations(the value of a college degree(6). Research has also consistently shown a positive correlation between completion of higher education and good health, not only for one self but for one child. Here Carnegie foundation is making a point to say that students with a higher education seems to think more clearly and have a brighter mind set(7), with this being said, the children of these students will be instilled with the same benefits.

Most graduates/non graduates would certainly take issue with the argument that higher education is not worth the cost. For example, Alex Sousina age 18 is looking for money making venture possibly in real estate, but works at a pizza place in Ohio delivering pizzas. He has no plans for college.

He states “at the end of four years, I don’t want to owe an institution upwards of 50,000 dollars and not have a guaranteed job. ”(Young and Jobless (13). Grace Anderson age 22 see’s Alex point after graduated with a B. A. degree in economics and she has yet to find work. She has put out 100 resumes, she says that she doesn’t want to settle for a dead end job and has been on dozens of interviews. She also stated that she been to a good school, got good grades, played a sport, did a internship and has been networking like crazy, at this point she’s despite. 14) Although higher education could be costly, not getting an education could be extremely costly.

What Alex doesn’t understand is that he doesn’t have to pay 50,000 dollars back all at once, he setup a payment plan. I think that he as well as others is just using the cost of an education as an excuse. In Graces’ situation, I can see where her frustration comes from. So I do agree with her on some points she has made. She has attended school and put in hard work, but she still hasn’t seen any results. I would be upset too, but I still have to remember that Rome wasn’t built in one day.Meaning, sometimes it takes time to be successful, but you have to remember that it’s all going to payoff in the end. We all know that the cost of a higher education isn’t cheap, but in the long run; well worth it.

Despite of the high tuition fees, a college degree could lead young black men of America to a great road to success. The reason why a college education is so important is because it helps to create careers instead of jobs. Nowadays many jobs prefer a degree, which means the people with anything less than tha will either get low paying jobs or no jobs at all. Having a college education not only benefits the student but is beneficial to their offspring as well. It helps the children to become more open minded so that they can be successful as well.

Many sources think that college is a waste of time and that they would rather be working. I say that living from paycheck to paycheck is a waste of time, why go through life wishing and hoping that you could be a success, when the only thing that’s holding you back young men are you.Works CitedPorter, Kathleen. ‘’The Value of a College Degree,” “Eric Digest.
