IntroductionMany of us don’t wonder where our food comes from and how it’s processed. In the past, millions of farm animals in Canada suffer from cruelty and abuse every year through the means of factory farming.
Factory farming is when farm animals are kept indoors in filthy dark sheds and crammed into wire cages and being injected and fed off antibiotics and drugs to speed up the growth process. Farmers make more money by shoving all the animals into tight spaces, the more animals there are, the more profit will be made. But many animals also die due to this because of the diseases of other animals. These animals will never be able to raise their own families.
Factory Farming in Canada There are many factory farms in Canada. Employees use chains and rakes to abuse the cows. Some employees in Canada have even been charged.
Each year, more than 700 million animals are slaughtered for food in Canada. In the last 50 to 60 years, factory farms in Canada have changed dramatically; the number of them have significantly declined. Even though the number of factory farms has decreased, animals are still transported for up to 52 hours without food, water, and sunlight; many animals die each year because of this.Why does it exist? It was first invented by scientists in 1960 who knew there was no way to continue feeding animal products to an increasing human population. Factory farming only exists now because agricultural businesses simply do not care about animal rights. The food company has worked hard to hide “cheap” food while hiding its devastating impacts on people, animals and more. Food labels are an example of this, the “100% natural” label misleads us. The industries don’t want us knowing about the harsh things animals go through.
The sad thing is that we don’t even consider where our meat comes from and if the animal we eat was only harshly and brutally raised for profits. Most Canadians expect our laws to protect animals in factory farms, but the reality is that animals raised for food are among the least-protected group of animals. Factory farming is very cruel because many animals have never even touched the ground or seen direct sunlight, or felt the wind.
The animals are so cramped up in cages that the chickens can’t spread their own wings or peck the ground. The animals are given iron-deficient meals. The meat that is produced by factory farming is fairly cheap because of the low quality.
Parts of the animal bodies that shouldn’t be used in food are, such as lips, eyes, testicals; such are used in patties. To produce quality of the meat, it is given a water injection to make it look fresh, that’s why when you cook it, the meat shrinks in size because the water evaporates. The animals are also injected with drugs to have faster growth and then passed on to us when we eat it, which affects our human health. The price of industrial food is low and does not reflect the real cost of production.
Unfortunately there are many hidden costs such as fossil fuel use and damage to human health, the owners don’t pay these costs; we do as taxpayers and the society as a whole. Factory farms are affecting our health greatly because of ending the actual traditional process of making meat, study shows this has increased health risks to humans very quickly. In conclusion, factory farm animals are not the only ones suffering from these conditions, human health and farmers are being hurt by the farming system.
Factory farming is very devastating, we now kill 700 million animals each year to satisfy our demand of meat, eggs, and dairy. More action should be done to stop this. More federal laws in Canada should be made to protect animals on factory farms. Us as humans should be more cautious when buying meat and looking at the food labels.
