In the vast universe, there are many theories as to how it came to be, how big it is and how big it will expand. A little closer to home we have our solar system.
Its closer distance to the Earth makes it no easier to investigate all of the celestial objects that scientists wish to examine further. Over the course of many years, astronomers have researched the eight planets, two of which being Venus and Uranus. These two planets, although in the same solar system, vary from one another in a multitude of ways, from their composition to their atmospheric pressure. Venus is sixth largest planet in our solar system, with a mass of approximately 4.
9*1024 kg (Venus Facts: Paragraph 1). Venus is the hottest planet, hotter than even Mercury, in our solar system, even though it is the second planet from the sun. On average, Venus is 108,208,930 km away from the sun (Charles Q, 2017). This is due to its intense thick atmosphere that captures heat, and reaches temperatures as high as 870?(Charles Q, 2017).
Venus’s heavy atmosphere creates a surface pressure that’s 90 times the intensity of Earth’s and is mainly composed of carbon dioxide, sulfuric acid and trace amounts of water (Charles Q, 2017). Venus contains a metallic iron core and a molten mantle, it’s core being one of the reasons for Venus’s lack of a magnetic field (Charles Q, 2017). Venus’s weak magnetic field could also be explained by its slow rotation, which may not be fast enough to create a stronger magnetic field (Nola Taylor Redd, 2012). A venusian year consists of approximately 225 days in length (Charles Q, 2017).Venus has a tilt of 3.39°, which is too slight to cause seasons like it does on Earth.
Such a small tilt means that Venus would have consistent temperatures year round if it didn’t have such a heated atmosphere (Nola Taylor Redd,2012). Venus is a terrestrial planet just like Mercury, Earth and Mars. This means it has a slow rotation, no rings, a low number of satellites and other factors that define it as a terrestrial planets (The Solar System: Paragraph 12). It is also considered an inferior planet, which is defined as being viewed from Earth in phases and being closer to the sun than Earth (which is also due to it being an inner planet) (The Solar System: Paragraph 14).
One accepted theory of Venus’s formation is core accretion which says that when the solar system was being created, once the sun had formed, remaining material began to accumulate due to gravity , and solar winds blew away any light matter leaving behind only rocky matter which created worlds such as Venus. (Nola Taylor Redd, 2016). Venus currently has no moons, but there’s evidence to believe that Venus had had two impacts, one of which created a moon (David Tytell, 2006). However, that moon would’ve left Venus’s orbit, and the second impact was large enough to reverse the rotation of planet- this theory explains both Venus’s lack of a satellite and direction of orbit (David Tytell, 2006). Venus is the only planet to be named after a woman, and it was the Roman goddess of beauty at that. (Charles Q, 2017). Uranus was discovered by William Herschel in 1781 and is the third largest planet in our solar system (Views of the Solar System, Uranus: Paragraph 1). It has a diameter of 51,118 km and a mass of 8.

Uranus is the coldest planet even though it is closer to the sun than Neptune, this is because it has a cooled down core that doesn’t exude as much as heat as other planets (Matt Williams, 2016). In fact, it is often called an “ice giant” , because it has an upper layer of hydrogen,a lower ice mantel, and a rocky ice core (Space Facts: Paragraph 5). The atmosphere is composed of hydrogen, helium and methane (Uranus Facts: Paragraph 8). Uranus doesn’t have a centered magnetic field- instead it is angled at about 60°(Uranus Facts: Paragraph 12). Uranus itself is tilted almost completely on its side, which gives it intense seasons that last for around 20 years (Charles Q, 2017).
Uranus has a climate that triggers wild storms and diamond rain (Charles Q,2017). Uranus is a jovian or gas planet which means it is mainly composed of hydrogen and helium, has a low density, rings and moons (The Solar System: Paragraph 13). It is also considered a superior planet, it is seen in its full view rather than in phases and is farther from the sun than the Earth (The Solar System: Paragraph 14). There are 27 known moons of Uranus, mostly named after Shakespearean and Alexander Pope’s works (National Geographic, Uranus: Paragraph 7). Uranus’ rings were discovered in 1977 during the Voyager missions (Solar Views, Uranus: Paragraph 4). A day on Uranus is shorter than a day on Earth at a little over 17 hours (How Long is a Day on Uranus?: Paragraph 1).
A theory that describes Uranus’ formation is called the disk instability method (Nola Taylor Redd, 2016). It says that in the early beginnings of our solar system, dust and gas quickly found its way together and closely compacted into the gas giants we know today (Nola Taylor Redd, 2016). Uranus was named that after a Greek god who was the father of Saturn (Nola Taylor Redd, 2012). Uranus was almost named Georgium Sidus, after King George III but it didn’t take (Nola Taylor Redd, 2012).
Venus and Uranus are two vastly different planets; one terrestrial and one a gas giant, one incredibly hot and one incredibly cold, but even with that they do share some common threads.
