Imagine new forms of weapons, tanks, airplanes,
Imagine having to run for your life whenever the sound of a gunshot isfired, imagine how life is living in trenches and unhealthy conditions, thatwas the life of every civilian and solider during WWI. World War I has a lot ofdifferent names, it is also known as “The Great War” and “The War to End AllWars”, but they all share one similar word “war”.
WWI started around theending of July 1914 till November 11th, 1918, it lasted approximatelyfor 4 years, 3 months and 2 weeks. 32 countries were involved in this GreatWar. There are many theories about how World War I started, but manyhistorians believe that when Archduke Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarianthrone, was assassinated by Gavrilo Princp in Sarajevo – currently thecapital of Bosnia and Herzegovina – is whattriggered the start of WWI.
Gavrilo Pricp was a Bosnian Serb who was a member of the “Black Hand”, asecret military association whose purpose was to be liberated from theAustro-Hungarian Empire and create their own independent country “Yugoslavia”. Theassassination was an immediate cause of WWI, but there are multiple long-termcauses such as, Imperialism, Nationalism, Militarism, and Alliances. As the wars increased, new forms of weapons, tanks, airplanes, submarines, etc…. were needed. During WWI a lot of new inventions occurred, such as, poison gas, hydrophones, tanks, tracer bullets, air traffic control, aircraft carriers, pilotless drones, and mobile x-ray machine. The important alliances that happened before the start of WWI are:- TripleEntente: Great Britain, France and Russia.- TripleAlliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy. The allies fought against the central powers during WWI.
Allies:- Russia,Serbia, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium and the United States.Centralpowers:- Austria-Hungary,Germany, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria. The Zimmerman Telegram is one of the keys that led to the end of WWI,where Germany asked Mexico to join them, in return, Germany promised to helpMexico reclaim their lost territories.
Russia backed up from the war in year1917 (before the end of the war), its economy fell and its people werestarving. This led to the Russian Revolution and the rise of the Bolsheviks, aswell as the loss of the Tsars’ power. The Armistice of 11 November 1918, is an agreement that calmed down thewars on the Western Front, it marked as a victory for the allies – even thoughGermany did not surrender yet –. Eventually, Germany surrendered onNovember 11th 1918, knowing they have already lost. With the ending events of World War I, a treaty had to be made to settledown the situation.
The Treaty of Versailles was signed in Paris, 5years after the start of the war, it was the main treaty that ended theconflict between Germany and its rivals. Many historians believe that thistreaty was unfair and it could be the cause of the start of WWII, because thetreaty made Germany give up most of its lands. World War I is known to be the deadliest war in history, the number ofdeaths of both military and civilian is around 18 million deaths; it also left23 million injured people behind, some wounded, amputated, distorted and othersbetween life and death. After the Treaty of Versailles was signed, new nations formed:- Austria.- Hungary.- Finland.- Poland.- Estonia.- Lithuania.- Latvia.- Yugoslavia- Czechoslovakia.
