I can mention many moments that were very exciting and unforgettable, but the single most memorable moment was the first time I laid my eyes on a set of LEGOs. It is mainly about recognizing the fact that one can build up and create something in three dimensions that amazed my soul from within, and also brought me miles closer to construction industry throughout the years. In fact, my mother has always been a great source of inspiration, not only to limitlessly pursue my dreams, but also to have absolute certainty that those dreams and goals would benefit a crowd of other people and not just myself. I have seen a glimpse of the kind of future I am aiming for in my current position as a Technical Office Engineer, and also during my internships in college.

With the body of experience I have built up during my undergraduate studies and afterward, I see a career for myself in construction, and I know that I have to earn a firm educational background upon which to build my future practice. My childhood admiration of construction models enhanced my imagination and instilled in me a passion for mathematics and science. My enthusiasm coupled with teachers’ backing boosted my studies, helped in polishing my skills and led to achieving 99.8% in Thanaweya Amma. Accordingly, I’ve enrolled in the prestigious Ain Shams University. The undergraduate curriculum in Civil Engineering introduced me to a wide range of subjects, both in and outside the field. Various courses like Structural Analysis, Concrete Design, Irrigation and Soil Mechanics have provided me with a strong understanding of theoretical and design concepts of Civil Engineering.  It was the field of Steel Structures which particularly captured my interest.

The desire to delve deeper into this subject persuaded me to choose it as the scope of my graduation project. While offering both depth and breadth across this field, this project put into perspective the importance and relevance of Civil Engineering and the application of its fundamentals in daily life, I also acquired valuable experience and information about steel design especially under the supervision of Dr. Ahmed Hassan Youssef and Dr. Said Abo El-Haggag. In spite of the strong academic curriculum presented at Ain Shams University, it lacked in-depth exposure to Construction Management and concentrated mainly on design subjects. I got acquainted with Construction Management through a basic course by Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Abdel Rasheed which opened my eyes to the basic construction management methods, planning, and resource management.

Consequently, I’ve enrolled in the project management program “PRMG” in the AUC which presented a more advanced exposure to subjects as Resources Management, Contracts and Bids and Project Budgeting. Throughout my undergraduate education and to better prepare for my career, I have interned in Site Engineering roles at ABB and BAPETCO, in addition to interning as a Steel Designer at AIC Steel during the summer vacation of my fourth year in college. That internship inspired and encouraged me to start my first professional position in the steel structures field working as a Steel Design Engineer at Horizon Engineering Solutions which specializes in offshore steel design where I gained vast exposure to classification societies and design standards in Egypt and abroad.

My second and current position is also in the same field as a Technical Office Engineer at Hassan Allam Construction where my duties include steel detailing, design, planning and document control. At this very point of my career, I realize that my undergraduate education has provided me with only a glimpse of this field and that there is so much more waiting to be explored in this industry. Thus, I am convinced that my academic career will receive the required exposure and enhancement at the American University in Cairo. I am applying to your University because of the excellent reputation of your school, distinguished faculty and excellent facilities.
