“Human intelligence, mental quality that consists of the abilities to learn from experience, adapt to new situations, understand and handle abstract concepts, and use knowledge to manipulate one’s environment.”(Encyclopedia Britannica, 2018)The study of intelligence began over a 100 years ago. Over the years there has been argument  between theorists and researchers on whether intelligence is nature or nurture. Some believe intelligence is a genetic factor and others believe intelligence is enhanced by the environment around us.

Many researchers that believed intelligence comes solely from genetics have very little evidence to support their argument but then again theorists saying it may be by our environment may not be fully correct, although they do have some experiments that can support their theory. In the 20th century, Frenchman Alfred binet developed the first test imitating a modern intelligence test.  Binet formed some questions together and a chose a particular group of participants, he decided to use children with different kinds of disabilities. Binet made sure the children were all different ages so that they could answer the questions correctly. Binet believed that intelligence develops as we get older. Although binet had his own theory of what intelligence was and where it came from, spearman had his own theory and wanted to see if it was true.

Spearman gave people testes of many kinds of cognitive ability. As spearman examined the correlation of these tests with each other, he realised that the results were positive and this was called “positive manifold”. Spearman believed  that if someone can do a certain thing such as playing a piano, they can do other things if they wanted to and this is a positive factor, hence why it was called “positive manifold”. He was basically saying that if they can learn one thing, they can learn other things which means they are able to learn many different things because they have the intelligence to do so.

Over a 100 years ago many people did not have access to information the way we do now. Research allows one to tap into information without any hassle.

It is the way many people can broaden their knowledge in certain topics. It helps to have back-up information to support your original theory. Research helps you find out different information that you may have not known before. In conclusion, the statement “Research into intelligence hasn’t helped our understanding of this topic” is not a valuable statement in my opinion. Intelligence is enhanced by the environment around us. Research helps to improve our previous theory about something. Without research we do not have any prove fact to support our initial theory on a topic. What does that mean? In the society today e.

g university, when we do a report on a certain topic we are expected to have information to back up our knowledge on the topic. As we research, we learn new things and that is what have intelligence is about, the ability to learn new things. Therefore research into intelligence has helped our understanding of this topic in a positive way.
