How History Shapes Our Lives Essay
History is what shapes our daily lives. All the past events such as fights for justice and freedom make it possible to survive in today’s day and age. In the past many people were discriminated against because of the color of their skin while others were forced and bullied to move off of their own premises just because others had that authority. A lot of history that is learned about and recognized is because of the works and writings available for us to read. Through literature we learn a lot of untold stories.
With literature we can learn about events from the past in more debt. It helps us understand and analyze what they felt and went through. In the poem Georgia 1838 we can learn how the Cherokees were forced out of their lands and “When the Cherokees refused to leave the state set up a lottery to rid them of their lands” he also speaks about how they were “roust from their tables and beds” and “stripped of everything they owned”. The “Trail of Tears” was a time in the past when there were ten million Native Americans on this continent when the first non-Indians arrived.
Over the course of 300 years, almost all of the Native American original population was either wiped out by disease, famine, or warfare imported by the whites. They had to walk for months, days and years in seek of a new home and along the way many died due to different diseases and infections. They faced many obstacles on this journey with “dark clouds massing thunder splitting lightning forking” (The Trail page 11). These works of art help us better understand what the Native Americans were facing when they were being forced off the land not only by others but by nature.
As they walked many were wounded, sick, a few new born babies has joined, and old men were at the point of death. They had no protection, no medication and nothing to save them. In the poem the crossing he says “I felt ill and sensed that cholera has set in” a disease given to him by the people who came and intruded on their lands. Through the walk as they lost their members they abandoned their dead “with no red pole no dark grapevine to mark their graves”(page 28) all they had were their tears to seal their trail.
This poem gives us more insight on what happened during this time than just a text book. Literature gives us a more in detailing and insider view on what was going on. This poem gives us a visual incite on what was going on through the eyes of a person who was there to experience it. It tells us more about feelings and facts about people where a text book wouldn’t give us all that incite. With the historical context the poems were better to understand and are more appreciated because it’s on an event that happened.
It’s about things that people went through and about something that couldn’t happen in today’s society because it could not be justified. Literature is important to us because it lets us learn about an experience through the eyes of another person other than ourselves. A lot of literature is set in a historical context and this allows us to learn about it in a more concentrated way. While reading “Vanishing Languages” it teaches the difference between the way life was in the past and how things have changed.
It was normal for people to kill animals in their garages or backyard using a gun or knife but if they were to do it now they’d be arrested and it is illegal. It talks about how things changed and shows us that there were so many more different kinds of cultures when life has just begun, and over time different languages became less popular and more uncommon to use. With literature you can relive the past and learn more about it in a way that a social studies book wouldn’t be able to teach you because the stories told in works of literature illustrate how it would feel to live through those times.
Like famous battles, famines, times of prosperity and times of depression. A lot of what is learned from literature and history comes from it being preserved because of people writing the things they are going through, what they feel and what they hope will change helping us see things through the eyes of other, giving us a sense of feeling to feel what they feel and what their experiences were like. Literature is called “the mirror of life”. It gives an opportunity to see things through the thoughts and minds of others.
It is a mode of expression feelings and emotions. Often it can be used to enlighten a dark mind and lighten a heavy heart. In the past many used it to express themselves, tell a story and now we use it to learn and understand what they have went through. Without literature a lot of the past stories would remain a mystery. It’s important to know the past and about history to help a person better understand them. History will always be important in society.
