In 1982, an Air Florida jet crashed into a river killing all but five passengers. The survivors waited for nearly a half hour before being rescued by a helicopter and two different men, both bystanders to the crash. The two men today are considered heroes and are praised for their courageous achievement. Today the common conception of a hero is a man who flies over your head in tights fighting evil; yet what does it truly mean to be considered a hero of the real world?Throughout the world the term “hero” is used to describe numerous kinds of people in all walks of life.

Generally, to be considered a hero, one must determine one’s self for the greater good, be looked up to for inspiration, or have selfless acts for another person or cause. Every hero throughout the ages has helped create the standards which people use today to describe what it means to be hero. The most common achievement of heroism is a selfless act of courage and determination.When Lenny Skutnik; a bystander of the 1982 plane crash; saw the few survivors struggling to stay afloat in the icy river, he probably assured himself that some one else would come to help those people. A rescue helicopter did show, however when he saw a woman slip from the helicopters safety line, he dived into the river to take matters into his own hands, and attempt to save the woman’s life, endangering his own in the process.With surely much persistence, Lenny managed to drag the lady through the icy water and pull her out the river to safety, a great accomplishment after he risked his own life for a woman he did not know. Even though he could have drowned or died from the freezing temperatures, he pushed forward thinking only of the woman’s safety, and despite his probable instincts pushing him to forfeit and save himself, he succeeded.

Persistence is a key role in the process to achieve heroic deeds.With courage and determination, Skutnik managed a feat most would never attempt, yet in an interview he claimed “It was human instinct, it happens all the time. ”. Modesty aside, determination, mental strength, bravery, persistence, all key stones in what it means to be a hero.

In addition to determination and persistence, to be a hero one must selflessly act and ultimately sacrifice for the greater cause. Though Lenny Skutnik risked his life for the woman in the river, his achievement is minimal compared to another savior of the five survivors.Known only as “the man in the water”, he is described as balding, probably in his fifties, and having an extravagant mustache. He was in the water with the other survivors of the plane crash, and according to two of the survivors, every time the life line was dropped from the helicopter to the mysterious man, he passed it on to another passenger. Eventually he was the last man in the water, by the time the helicopter returned to rescue him, he had gone under the water, died probably from Hypothermia. This is a clear example of the sacrifice a hero could make for the benefit of others.If the man had not passed on the life line, another of the passengers would have presumably died, leaving the survivors, family, and friends eternally grateful for his gift of life, with the price of his own. According to Roger Rosenblatt; the author of the essay: “The Man in the Water”; at some point [the man] must have realized that he would not live if he continued to hand over the rope and ring to others.

This shows how despite probable fear for his life he was determined to save the other passengers, and purposely chose to sacrifice him self for the ensured safety of others.Self sacrifice and risk are the most important roles in playing what it means to be a hero, and “the man in the water’s” sacrifice of his life truly does make him a hero. Not all heroes have to risk or sacrifice themselves for another person or cause, but are considered heroes because they have achieved something worthy of praise. For some, celebrities are considered heroes, because they have achieved fame through skill or looks, yet most success does involve hard work and persistence. One such hero with praise worthy skill is the infamous Basketball player Michael Jordan.

His skill in an athletic sport give people something to look up to for inspiration, and pushes them to achieve greater feats. Even though Jordan never risked his life, he did possess extreme determination to become the best of his ability; practicing every day to the best of his ability; a trait praised to be heroic. “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.

”, Jordan’s famous quote exemplifies his admiration and inspiring feats that make him a hero for millions of people throughout the world.Other celebrities that may be considered heroes are musical artist, actors, or creative artist, because they have used their skill and work to inspire to do their best to achieve the same success. Those who may not have sacrificed anything for the good of others, can be a hero because they have praise worthy and inspiring achievements, accomplished through great persistence and determination.
