Going for the Look Essay

In Marshal Cohen argument responding to Steve Greenhouse article, “Going for the Look, but Risking Discrimination,” Greenhouse argues that companies only hire people for their looks and not for their experience. This has been going on for a long time, but some people never really realized it. Companies like Abercrombie & Fitch and L’ Oreal that hire based on looks and not on the experience of the person, reminds me of a bully who does things and doesn’t get caught, but when it does he gets in trouble for it and denies it.I believe that companies that hire for the looks and not for the value of the person is simply just called discrimination. Cohen argues that marketing business has changed and so have the methods of hiring potential and experienced people.

Cohen states that setting and image or hiring people to set the image is smart and it makes it easier for them to lure customers in. He says that having a walking billboard is better than having an employee that has experience in retailing and knows what goes on.The way that Cohen uses jargon is to cover up the way that he believes discrimination is right as long as you get money and the people “fit the image”. Not having skills, but being attractive is never good for anything or anyone. “In today’s competitive retail environment, the methods have changed for capturing the consumers’ awareness of your brand’’ This quote was said by Marshal Cohen who states himself that discrimination plays a big role in the business world. In today’s society you need to have the right look. Whether you have the right body type or the right face for the job you should be able to get a job no matter what you look like.In conclusion, companies shouldn’t hire because of looks, they should hire for the experience of the person.

Like Greenhouse argues that it is just a way of telling people know it is discrimination. I agree with him since this has been going for a long time, I think mostly everyone knows that it isn’t going to change. Discrimination towards people just because they aren’t the “right kind” has been used in companies for years. Even if you aren’t a “pretty face” or have what they need, never give up and look for a job where they hire for who you are.
