George Washington George Washington was the first president of the United States of America.

He was born in National Monument, Virginia on February 22nd, 1732. George’s older brother, Lawrence, took care of him as a child, because his father died when he was eleven. George was educated in the basic subjects such as math and reading. When he was sixteen, George worked as a surveyor, he took measurements of land and mapped them out in detail.

As a young adult, he became a leader with the Virginia militia and became involved with the French Indian war. After the war was over he married Martha Dandridge. He didn’t have kids of his own, however he raised Martha’s two kids from her previous marriage. In 1789, he was elected president of the United States. Some major events that happened during his term were the congress passed the first naturalization law, establishing terms of  citizenship,  the states officially ratify the first ten amendments to the constitution, also known as the bill of rights, finally George Washington signs the first United States copyright law.  George Washington’s term of office lasted from April 30th, 1789 until March 4th, 1797.

His vice president was John Adams. George did not go to college. Some interesting facts about George Washington are that he was a dog lover and his favorite breakfast was pancakes served with butter and honey. Something he was well known for is that he led the continental army in victory over the British in the American Revolution.

He died with a bad cold and a throat infection. George Washington was the only president in which all the state representatives voted for him. He was never in Washington D.C while he was president even though it was named after him.

 George Washington was six feet tall which in the 1700’s was very tall. The story about George Washington cutting down his father’s cherry tree is thought of as fiction and probably never really happened.
