Food and Feeding the World Essay

Food and Feeding the WorldAbstractThe aim of the study is to evaluate and weigh up healthy diet, global food production and ways to produce more nutritional food for starving nations.

At the begging of the twentieth century the discovery of the vitamins opened a new era of healthy life stile. Since then, an enormous amount of researches have been carried out show a relationship between balanced diet and general human health. But not everyone today can enjoy healthy diet. Many people are suffering from hunger and cannot help themselves for the obvious reasons.

Therefore, the assay also provides some suggestions of finding additional recourses for the world’s aid programs.[kostia1] [kostia2]-1-Food and Feeding the WorldThe quality of human being lives is closely linked to the quality of food they consume. The human body has been associated with a sophisticated engine which needs top quality petrol.

If it has not been given suitable petrol, like all engines, it will not last long or will not run properly. But what about one billion people, who live today in abject poverty and don’t have much of, chose what “petrol” to take. So, in my assay I will discus the essentiality of the healthy diet for human being and ways of feeding starving nations.

Food ProductionOne of the fastest growing sectors in the global food production is the sea food industry. In the past decade the demand on the sea food in the world rose dramatically. That is why I choose it for further evaluation.

More than four thousand of aquatic species are harvested every year worldwide. This includes wild and culture catch (fish grown in ponds and cages), generally called aquaculture. One-fifth of the world’s fish supply is produced from aquaculture and this percentage is rising.

The annual wild catch rose between 1950 and 1990 in four times, and since then remain approximately the same. In contrast, harvest from aquaculture continues to clime, almost eleven percent a year in the past decade. The biggest producers of fish in the world today are: China (32%), Japan (5%), followed by India, USA, and Russia roughly four percent each.Salmon-grown farms have it own place in aquaculture. There are three main grounds for growing salmon artificially. First of all, people want to eat more salmon than can be caught. Today, wild salmon can satisfied only about one-third of the world’s claim for this fish.

And this demand is growing day by day for the reason that people find salmon as a delicious, healthy diet. It is hard to denied, that the catch of wild salmon cannot be increased.  Salmon fisheries are helping to prevent the threat of over-fishing that had led to the reduction and near disappearance of some valuable ocean fish.Secondly, the fresh fish is much more popular than the sea fish therefore only farmed salmon can match the year-around demand.Thirdly, it’s the growing demand for protein in the world. Farm-raised fish and crustacean is one of the key solutions to nourish poorest in the 21st century. The reasons are:·                    There is not enough rich soil available for growing food to fulfill long-term food demand.

·                    The water supply for irrigation is drying off at an alarming rate which indicates that irrigated lands will no longer be available for agriculture in the near future.·                    For more than a billion people fish is the only source of protein.·                    World’s population is growing very fast. Moreover, the recent study revealed, that salmon is not only a low fat source of protein, but also have amazing health benefits due to high content of Omega-3 fatty acids. Universities and institutes all over the world have cared out a number of researches which confirming that the consumption of salmon has many health advantages that haven’t been known before. Here are some of them:·                Reduce risk of heart attack.

·                Reduce the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease in people aged 65-90 by 60 percent.·                It is vital to normal eye and brain development in infants.·                Beneficially impacting on depression.Given that, that omega-3 fatty acids are found in a small number of foods and since many of them are not in the regular diet. It is much easier for people to eat a single salmon meal once a week than three or more of other fish.Salmon-raising farms bring also many economic advantages to the area.

This internationally competitive industry has an enormous value and huge economic potential. It contributes millions and millions dollars in tax revenue payments.  The salmon aquaculture industry is an essential part of the local economy. It consist of hatcheries, aquatic grow-out pond, feed plants, cage makers, and marketing firms which offer plenty of jobs for local community.Jobs in farms are well-paid and very difficult to find; roughly eighty percent of all positions are full-time jobs that provide a sense of security for families. In fact, people aim to contribute their personal values to the area, which further improve economic development. The mainstream industry supports other employment in such industries as packaging, transportation, and the retail businesses. It is worthy of note, that around seventy five percent of all jobs are held by young people who’s age are under forty.

This quite clearly shows the significance of the industry to the region. The aquaculture industry encourages young people to stay in their local area.Farming salmon has also a number of disadvantages. It is widely accepted, that we cannot regard the environment separately from human being activities.

We are all part of it and we have to protect its quality.  Protecting ecosystem and a variety of wildlife is essential for the health of human beings. When habitats are partly destroyed, there can be significant changes in food chain which can seriously damaged the natural balance.

In edition, ecosystem already has economic and social value. For example, they can contain considerable forest or rich soil recourses that can be used by agriculture or tourism industry. After all, fish industry is not an exception, it can harm ecosystem at the same rate as any other industry.Food Transportation /MarketingToday, people do their shopping in supermarkets that are generally located in suburbs and far away from each other. This suggests that people must overcome a long distance to get their shops; burning away a lot of petrol on the way there even for a small shopping. If there has been a local shop that can satisfied a small-shopping customer, it can save money from unneeded spending and relocate it to the world’s aid programs. Fortunately, in my area there is a small shop, three minutes for a walk, where I can get a loaf of bread or pack of milk without driving. As I said above, human societies must function with the awareness of the fact that we are a part of the nature, not separate from it.

We must realize that resources of our planet are limited and the issue of over-packaging and recycling must be taking seriously. It can be often seen, that a small product, such as a toy, can be wrapped up in cardboard or plastic that is mach heavier than the toy itself. This situation cannot be accepted any more and must be changed. And the best way, I think, lies through the costumer’s attitude towards the product that they buy and how it has been packed. If the majority of the customers will buy goods according to the environmental recommendations which I provided below that will be a stimulating point for manufacturers to follow. Otherwise, companies will continue to pack their products in big, shiny packages that absolutely useless and cost millions and millions for them every year. Here are some environmental advices for buying goods:·         Look for products that are unpackaged or simply packaged, without unneeded plastic cover or cardboard backing.

·         Buy durable goods with long term warranty.·         Ask the questions, “Is it made from recycled materials and can it be reused?”Another widely discussed topic is locally produced food. In my opinion, this is a very important issue in the scale of global food production and personal diet.

Local food is more likely to be fresher and in better condition than food distributed from long distances. Fruit that shipping for a long time usually picked unripe which pointed out on a lot of loss of nutrients. In edition, chemicals that have been sprayed over the fruit, to extend the time of going off, can seriously damage your health.Local food is good for the local customers, because it has truthful information of how the vegetables were grown or how the meat was produced. Besides, much of the produce is very fresh .

It needs only one or two days to deliver vegetables from the fields to the shelves in the supermarket.Buying locally produced food we also save our ecosystem. Local food travels much less distance than imported which means less vehicle pollution- the direct cause of climate change. According to the web-site, “…an average Christmas dinner could have traveled over 20,000 miles before it reaches the supermarket. Compare that to the 300 miles it would have traveled if the produce was bought from a farmers market.” (Hinckley & Bosworth Online, 2004)Local farms and factories use less packaging. The produce that travels shorter distance requires less packaging to protect it during the delivery time.

Buying local food is also stimulating local economy which means more jobs are available in rural areas and more money feeding local economy which is beneficially for the area overall.Personal Food ConsumptionIn recent times, there has been growing concern about where the food come from that we buy. In the era of globalization large quantity of chip agricultural produce is available for businesses, but it doesn’t mean that it always unsafe to consume. It is quite awkward to get strait away information where fruit, vegetables, and especially meat come from. Because these products come to the retail shops in the big packages and then serve separately or by fraction.

In nine times out of ten, there is no available information about these products on the shelves beside it. In this regards, the state food safety authorities must play a leading role in regulations in this matter. Resent out-brake of the chicken diseases that are harmful for human, in China and Taiwan is a vivid example of seriously this problem. There is no doubt, that the cost of the food is the major influence on people’s diet. The more money you have the healthier food you likely to eat.

And I partly agree with that. However, it is not always true. When we talk about the cost and the true cost of something it usually means that the same product can be differently priced in different places. The reasons for that are widely ranged from number of middle men to the shop location, or simply belonging to the elite group.

But it doesn’t mean that you have no chance to get a healthy food for less money. There are so many restaurants and shops that serve and sell delicious meals full of nutritious for the affordable price.Misleading nutrition information and wrong attitude still exist because they are often deeply seated in our cultural backgrounds. All the way through history, many cultures have drowned the line between the health human being and particular foods. In fact, some of them look to be not as healthy as it seemed.

For instance: Mac Donald’s is a typical American restaurant that for many years associated with a happy, healthy meal, but now we can see a result of this cultural influence. People and especially children who were eating hamburgers and the rest of standard Mac Donald’s meals too often find themselves unhealthy and overweighed.ConclusionAlthough the healthy diet is essential for human beings that require a lot of afford and natural recourses supported by scientific researches there is still a “bigger fish to fry”- the world’s starvation.

We must find additional recourses to feed the hunger by producing more food and saving more money. In our planet there are more than one billion people who are starving right now and hopelessness looking into tomorrow.References:Hinckley & Bosworth Online. Hinckley Farmers’ Market.
