Parenting is a compilation of particular behaviors that may act separately or collectively to shape a child’s personality. Even though there are some specific parenting acts that can affect a child’s development outcome, focusing on any separate behavior may lead to a mistaken conclusion. This judgment directed many writers to turn to Baumrids theory of parenting style. Even though parent’s aproach on how to control or socialize their children might be divergent, it is parent’s essential obligation to influence and educate them. There are four categories of parenting styles depending on the level of parental demandingness and responsiveness: Authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and neglectful(Darling, N. , 1999). Authoritarian style is characterized by an excessively controlling behavior from the parent towards the child and their relationship is dominated by strictness and the parent’s power over the child.(Ingram, P. B. 2011). The authoritarian parent will attempt to form , regulate and direct the behavior and the character of the child according to his standarts. Parents of the aforementioned style consider obedience to be a virtue and support disciplinary, commanding methods to enforce their obstinacy when they believe the child is disobedient. This parent will not enforce verbal communication for being convinced that the child should accept his point of view regardless(Baumrind, D., 1966). According to Baumrids studies on preschool children, it was shown that the authoritarian type of family was connected to low levels of autonomy and social responsibility. The consequences of an authoritarian pattern may differ accordingly to the gender of the child, as reported by Baumrind, girls that come of the authoritarian background, showed to be more socially insistent rather than boys their age, however, for both genders, invasive parenting proved to be related with lower cognitive competence(Sanford M. Dornbusch, Philip L. Ritter, P. Herbert Leiderman, Donald F. Roberts and Michael J. Fraleigh, 1987). The permissive parenting style is represented by a high level of responsiveness but a very low level of demandingness. This type of parent isn’t concerned about traditional values and is considerably indulgent, mature behavior is not demanded from the child as a permissive parent allow self-regulation and considers confrontation unnescessary(Darling, […]
