What it means to be an educated person cannot be defined on physical terms but can rather be summarized by identifying the characteristics they internally possess. The importance of being educated cannot be underestimated in the sense of how it impacts the quality of life an individual may live.
An educated person is someone who seeks increased self-knowledge and understanding of others and the world; is able to integrate knowledge, skills, and values into a comprehensive perspective; uses knowledge and values to guide, conduct, and inspire inquiry in meaningful and responsible ways; and strives for the attainment of wisdom with joy and hope for the future. Many colleges assert in their curriculum catalogue that, “Education can help us live more complete and meaningful lives by nurturing essential values and skills”. The educated person is an individual who has, either through formal or self-taught study, learned much about the world in which he or she lives, the ways that object and how they are processed in material world functions, and a great deal about human nature and sociology. This individual is more likely than not to have developed the capacity for using his or her cognitive and metacognitive skills in the pursuit of knowledge and in the learning process.
An educated person also has a number of other skills that link him or her to being considered or understood as being educated.Some of the most outlining characteristics of this particular individual will be clearly stated and represented in this essay and include thinking skills, capacity to retain information, and developmental perspective. The first major point is critical to understanding what it means to be an educated person would be thinking skills. Thinking skills are often viewed as the ability to reason creatively, critically, reflectively, systematically, and imaginatively about complex problems and human endeavors.
They are the habits of intelligent behavior learned through practice, for example children can become better at giving reasons or asking questions the more they practice doing so. If thinking skills are the mental capacities people use to investigate the world, solve problems, and make judgments then to identify every such skill would be to enumerate all the capacities of the human mind, and the list would be endless. Thinking skills are important because mastery of the ‘basics’ in education (literacy, math, science etc.), however well taught, are not sufficient to fulfill human potential, or to meet the demands of the labor market or active citizenship. A ‘thinking skills’ approach suggests that people must develop awareness of themselves as thinkers and learners, practice strategies for effective thinking, and develop the habits of intelligent behavior that are needed for lifelong learning.
Metacognition, often used in correlation with thinking skills involves thoughts learned about one’s own thinking. Metacognition includes knowledge of oneself, for example of what one knows, what one has been taught, what one can and cannot do, and ways to improve one’s learning or achievement.Metacognition also involves skills of recognizing problems, representing features of problems, planning what to do in trying to solve problems, and monitoring progress and evaluating the outcomes of one’s own thinking or problem-solving activity. It’s not difficult to comprehend why an educated person would incorporate thinking skills into his or her daily life, seeing how it will maximize their results and further them in forms of growth and achievement.
