Dementia not very well understood. Individuals frequently

Dementiais not just an older people’s condition.

Younger people with dementia can facediscrimination. They may be forced to give up work, excluded from dementiaservices with a minimum age criterion, forced to travel considerable distancesto access appropriate services or left without support.People withdementia may be subject to mistreatment and abuse in the community or in carehomes and hospitals. This may include psychological, financial, emotional or physicalabuse. Althoughit’s very common, dementia is not very well understood. Individuals frequentlydon’t ask for help since there’s still a stigma attached. Or they think wronglythat the symptoms are a normal part of ageing, and that nothing can be done.Onthe other hand, there are laws that protects individuals from discriminationssuch as the Equality act.

This act provides the individuals the support andright to complain if they are not treated corresponded to their needs, alsothis act set out rules and regulations that informs professional how theyshould be behaving with patient and the law states that every health and socialcare setting should be following this law. Therefore, the act makes it illegalto treat people differently or less favorable because of their disability orage. Toget across the message that people with dementia can be helped, by raising awarenessand working with lots of different organizations to create dementia-friendlycommunities. Listening to people with dementia and understanding theirrich and varied histories is seen as essential to good care. This and involvesgathering information and artefacts about the person, their history andinterests.

Theessence of person-centered care is to put the person at the center of careplanning: this means finding out exactly who they are. Nurses can use manyresources to increase their knowledge and understanding of dementia, and theirfocus on person-centered care. Treatment and care should take into accountpatients’ needs and preferences. People with dementia should have theopportunity to make informed decisions about their care and treatment, inpartnership with their healthcare professionals. Good communication betweencare providers and people with dementia and their families and careers isessential, so that people with dementia receive the information and supportthey require. The treatment, care and information provided should be culturallyappropriate and in a form that is accessible to people who have additionalneeds, such as a family member will not be speaking English therefore they willbe needing a translator to teach and make the family member understand aboutdementia.Summaryon dementia policy PrimeMinister’s challenge on dementia 2020is a government policy that has been puttogether to improve care for people with dementia. The policy informs thepopulation what has been set out to improve the care of patients with dementia.

The policy also has taken many steps to promote anti discriminatory practice. The policy states that all NHS staff will be receiving training on dementiaappropriate to their role. Newly appointed healthcare assistants and socialcare support workers, including those providing care and support to people withdementia and their careers. Friends, family and careersof people with dementia being made aware of and offered the opportunity forrespite, education, training, emotional and psychological support so that theyfeel able to cope with their caring responsibilities and to have a lifealongside caring.

Assess dementia care policyThepolicy that has been set out to protect and inform individuals with dementia, Iwould rate this policy on a scale 1 to 5 a 4. This policy involved many carehomes and NHS to support the dementia care strategy. Furth more many NH’s staffhave been invested in by training them to become dementia friendly. I thinkthis policy is very effective as it spreads awareness for people who aresuffering from dementia and the level of support that is available.

On theother hand, I haven’t rated this a 5 because I think that they haven’t put mucheffort in informing the society about dementia. They haven’t been sendinggroups or organizations’ out to inform the people that needs to know also therehasn’t been booklets or leaflets available everywhere such as the pharmacytherefore the career wouldn’t be made aware of the things that may be happeningwith a dementia patient. Also they should spread awareness through campaigns.D1 Thispolicy has strength and weaknesses. There are different strengths of thispolicy. The person and their careers have been involved in care planning whichmakes them aware of what is gone happen further. Patients /careers have beeninvolved and listened to.

Staff can articulate safeguardingprocesses and their responsibility in raising concern. Another strength of thispolicy is that nationwide campaigning are arranged which helped people withdementia and their families. This campaigning’s helped them because they havebeen informed and have been given them the knowledge and understanding ofdementia. Theyhave informed the careers what are the needs of a dementia patients and howthey should be treated and handled.

As well as lot is done by to identify thesign early this is done by asking hospital and care homes to be part ofdementia friendly. Also the training resources has been increased for the staffon dementia awareness. As well as millions have been invested in research forscientists to find treatments to help with dementia as even know still less isknown about dementia Lastlythe most and powerful strength of this policy is that the funding to helppeople with dementia has been increased. This is a very important point in thepolicy as is gives the patient the power to be treated and have the chance toreceive treatment. Many dementia individuals have to pay their treatment andfees if they don’t have a pension that pays the treatment for them. Therefore, the dementia patients that will not be able to afford the cost they will not betreated which is meaning that they will not be giving the chance to be treatedas everyone else so this strength of the policy has given the individuals abetter chance of being treated and giving them the same rights as everyoneelse.

However,in this policy there are also weaknesses. One of the weakness is that doctors stilldiagnosis dementia incorrectly because they may be mistaken the symptoms. Ifthe doctors will be giving the patient the wrong diagnoses, then that means isnot fair to the patient and the patient will not be treated corresponded theway it should be treated as he the individuals may get the wrong informationand advice which then may occur problems such as the professional and patientwill not be having a steady relationship and they may not disclose theirproblem to the professional. This leads to the second weakness of this policy.the other weaknesses of this policy is that professional are focusing on peopleover 65 this means that means if a younger person will be having dementia thenthe doctors will be mistake the symptoms for depression or anxiety whichsuggest that the they are not treated the same in contrast they are treateddifferently than the ageism people. Another weaknesses is that even in today’stime abuse still happens in health and social care settings this means thatpeople with dementia do not receive person-centered care, are deprived of theirlegal rights and receive inappropriate treatments, such as physical restraint.

Inthis assignment I have started with an introduction to describe why people withdementia are discriminated due to dementia. I also said how to improve care forpeople with dementia. As well as I have summarized the main point of the primeminister challenge on dementia policy 2020. Furth more I assessed the primeministers challenge on dementia 2020 which aims to improve acre for people withdementia. I assessed this by a scale 1 to 5 meaning that 1 is not effective atall and 5 is very effective in promoting anti discriminatory practice.

Lastly Ihave evaluated the success of the policy by stating what are the strength andwhat are the weaknesses in promoting anti discriminatory practice.
