Comparative Analysis ofHomologous Characters Three individuals driven by the same intellectual mindbut separated by different contexts. In “Oedipus the King,” Creon is acharacter in a state of conflict with the main character Oedipus. Being in thisconflict, he manifests many facets and motives which allows him to becomparable to Germany’s Adolf Hitler and Star War’s Darth Vader. From this, Iwill be analyzing the manner in which Creon, Hitler, and Darth Vader are allsimilar but share distinctions through the situations they encounter.Initially,Creon portrays himself to be like the leader of the Nazi Party, Adolf Hitler.Both Creon and Hitler had the character flaw of being hubris. In “Oedipus theKing,” after Tiresias tells Oedipus he is Laius’s murderer and cause of theplague, Oedipus believes Creon has brought Tiresias to prophesize this in orderto steal the crown from him.
Regardless of these accusations, Creon is consistentlyarrogant and prideful providing subliminal answers to Oedipus’s inquiries. Whenasked if he brought the prophet, Creon simply answers, “and still I hold to theadvice I gave.” Later on Creon tells Oedipus,”may my life fail, may I die cursed, and if I did any of the things you said Idid!” Given that Creon is assertive that he has not done anything treacherousagainst the king, he doesn’t hold back on making boastful remarks exhibiting hisstrong ego. In an alike manner, Hitler had a similar hubris and surrounded himselfin much pride believing the Jews he killed was for the greater good of mankind.
He failed to regard to what anyone else thought, but did what he thought wasbest for society. However, at the end of the play, Creon’s hubris works in hisfavor while Hitler’s leads to his demise. When Creon is found not guilty of theconvictions made against him, his firm hubris aids him. He demonstrates that heis sensible and responsible enough to be King.
On the other hand, when Hitleris at the brinks of capture for his prideful crimes against humanity, he endsup committing suicide in fear instead of having dishonor slated to his name.Furthermore,Creon can also be compared to Star War’s Darth Vader. Both are alike with thechange of character they have at the end of their stories. For instance, Creonis very forgiving at the last scene of the play and dismisses the terribleaccusations Oedipus made against him. When Oedipus is grieving because the propheciesare true, he doesn’t make boastful remarks previously seen in the play, butrather lets him inside and promises to care for his children. Correspondingly,in the last movie of the Star War’s trilogy, Darth Vader kills the emperor outof empathy to save his son, Luke Skywalker, which shows the goodness he has inhim. Throughout the Star War movies, he can be depicted as monstrous for the manywrongful acts he committed.
So, by saving his son, it shows the change frombeing on the dark to the light side of the force. In contrast, Creon’s andDarth Vader’s nature are also discrete. Creon is individualistic and says/actsupon his own ideals.
He is pretty forthright and walks freely by his own wit.On the other hand, Darth Vader’s state of mind is guided by the emperor whom heobeys. Every course of action he inflicts on the empire is to please him. Conversely, Hitler himself was a spitting image of DarthVader’s dark side when taking account their demeanor and intentions. Both werevigilant rulers who wanted to control a vast spectrum which can be seen withHitler wanting to control the world and Darth Vader wanting the rule the wholeempire in the galaxy. They felt above other rulers in their settings, seeingthem as unfit and felt they had better plans.
When it came to the way theyestablished power, they didn’t hold back on imposing fear on the people. Bothknew that they had to have a mechanism for doing so which entailed a lot ofweaponry allowing them to have the great power they had for the time they did.On the contrary, when it came to the way their authority and position wasbestowed upon them, Hitler had it harder compared to the Darth Vader. Hitlerhad to start off his rule in a broken Germany that was weak and had recently beendefeated in war. So, he had to construct from nothing to create the fearless Germany he did. In contrast, DarthVader, apprentice to the emperor, took over an empire that was already wellestablished after the emperor destroyed the Jedi order. Darth Vader only wentto enforce the dark side of the force in ruling the empire.
In the final analysis, Creon, Hitler, and Darth Vader alldisplayed compelling comportment which made them stand apart in theirsocieties. Through comparative analysis of each, they showcased how they werenot only alike but divergent given the settings they were placed in. Therefore,it is key to note that an individual’s temperament, conjectures and actions, arenot much different than those found in a predisposed play, movie, or anonfictional individual.
