He is the first Asiatic American to keep a major research place at a University in the United States. Dr. Tien was born in Wuhan, China and was educated in Shanghai and Taiwan.
He completed his undergraduate instruction at the National Taiwan University. He so came to the United States in 1956, where he earned a Masterss degree at the University of Louisville in 1957. Both he and his married woman are naturalized citizens. They have three kids and two grandchildren. All of their kids are physicians.
