Boy In Striped Pyjamas Chapter Reviews Chapter 8 * Bruno tells us that out of all of Berlin, the people he misses most are his Grandparents. She couldn’t stand the thought that her son was in charge of a death camp and responsible for killing thousands of helpless Jews. * Bruno writes his grandparents a letter saying how much he hates being at Out-With and that he wishes he was back home with them, he tells them about the garden and the house, and the big wire fence. He then says that he misses them heaps and signs off with ‘your loving grandson’. Chapter 9 Lieutenant Kotler walks around Bruno’s house like he owns the place, even when father is there, and when he’s not doing that, he’s either in Father’s office, which is Out Of Bounds At All Times No Exceptions, or out the front with Gretel while she flirts with him. * The servants still came in and washed up and Maria still worked, mostly cleaning up and putting clothes away. * Father decided it was time for the children to return to their studies. So Gretel and Bruno’s parents hired a tutor by the name of Herr Liszt, who, much to Bruno’s dismay, was very fond of history and geography.

The children learn that Herr Liszt does not like story books at all and won’t let them read while he is home. They are only allowed to read factual books. * Bruno tells us that when he lived in Berlin, he used to love exploring, but now, at Out-With, he couldn’t for two reasons. 1. He had no one to do it with.

2. His parents wouldn’t let him go out the back which is where all the interesting stuff is. Chapter 10 * Bruno decided that he would go exploring down the big wire fence. The walk down took longer than he expected. It felt like it went on forever. * After walking for about an hour, Bruno saw a little dot in the distance and thought he was hallucinating, but after he took a few more steps, the dot became a speck, then began to look like a blob, then a figure, until finally Bruno realised that it was a boy. * He walked up to the boy and realised he was wearing the striped pyjamas. He quietly greeted the boy, and the boy replied.

On the boy’s arm, he wore a band with a star on it. The boy looks very scared and nervous. The boys introduced themselves and found out that they were the exact same age and shared a birthday, even though Bruno was obviously bigger. * Shmuel tells Bruno that he doesn’t really have any friends on his side of the fence, because he doesn’t really get along with them. Bruno get jealous because he thinks it’s not fair that he is stuck outside the fence with no one to play with; of course, he doesn’t know that it is a death camp.

* Bruno learns that Shmuel comes from Poland, and the boys compare where they used to live with each other. Chapter 11 Bruno tells us that just before he moved to Out-With, his father had invited a man called the Fury (Hitler) to dinner to discuss his job, and that he and Gretel had to be on their best behaviour, wear their best clothes, and that when Father and Mother were at dinner with the Fury, they were to stay in their room and not interrupt them. * Just before the Fury arrived, Bruno and Gretel were called into Father’s office. He told them, how important it was for his career that it went well, and set a few ground rules. * Bruno met the Fury and thought that he was too short to run the country, but greeted him politely anyway. The Fury started talking to Bruno about his shoes, making Gretel jealous, so she started to talk about her hair, which didn’t affect anything.

* Once the Fury had left, Bruno overheard his parents talking about moving away from Berlin, that they didn’t have a choice, that is wasn’t natural, that someone they couldn’t grow up in such a place, and that the decision was made and not another word was to be said about it. Chapter 12 * Bruno asked Shmuel why there were so many people on his side of the fence and he told him this. Before Shmuel moved to the camp, he lived with his parents and brother in Poland, but one day, the soldiers took everything from them and made them live in 1 room with his family and another, and he always got hit by the boy from the other family for no reason. Then the soldiers came again with their trucks and took them here, the camp. * Bruno is surprised when Shmuel tells him that he doesn’t play with the other boys because there is nothing to play. * Shmuel asks Bruno if he brought any food, but he hadn’t, then Shmuel had to go.
