According toShakespeare’s overall message about the roles of various relationships in ourlives, each couple fits in because of the theme of love, which can be seen indifferent means. As a matter of fact, this can be seen on three separateoccasions.
First off, Lysander and Hermia face many obstacles, which depictslove’s difficulties. To continue, Oberon and Puck can be seen as friends whoare unable to work without each other. Furthermore, Oberon’s love juice createsa contrast between Titania and Bottom. All in all, these couples fit flawlesslyinto Shakespeare’s overall message about the role of various relationships inour lives.
To begin with,Lysander and Hermia face many obstacles in their relationship. Shakespeare usesthe difficulty of love to draw the audience into the plot. He uses charactersto show the suffering and applications between loves ones. This can be seenwhen Egeus, the father of Hermia, goes to Theseus, the Duke of Athens, andstates, “Full of vexation come I, with complaint/ Against my child, my daughterHermia/ Stand forth, Demetrius. My noble lord,/ This man hath my consent tomarry her./ Stand forth, Lysander: and, gracious duke,/ This man hath bewitch’dthe bosom of my child:” (1.
1.25-30). As per this line, you can examine thatHermia’s father wants her to marry Demetrius. Evidently, this creates anobstacle for the two lovers because they cannot marry each other openly. In a similarcase, Lysander becomes a victim of the magic potion and falls in love withHelena. When Lysander wakes up he falls in love with Helena and comments,”Awaking.
And run through fire I will for thy sweet sake./ TransparentHelena! Nature shows art,/ That through thy bosom makes me see thy heart./Where is Demetrius? O, how fit a word/ Is that vile name to perish on mysword!” (2.2. 105). Due to the fact that Lysander liked Helena because of thepotion, it distanced the two lovers.
This was because Hermia suspected Helenawooed her man, which created a dispute amongst the two. To sum up, Lysander andHermia face many difficulties for their love to flourish. Having said that,Oberon and Puck can be seen as friends because even though Oberon is the boss, there is a friendly atmosphere between them. For instance, Puck boasted to afairy, “Thou speak’st aright;/ I am that merry wanderer of the night./ I jestto Oberon and make him smile/” (2.1. 45).
In agreement with this, you can seethat Oberon is the king of fairies and Puck carries out Oberon’s wishes. Youcan easily see the status difference, but they need each other to complete atask successfully. Aside from being good work partners, they are forgiving andunderstanding. This is because of the fact, Oberon exclaimed, “What hast thoudone? Thou hast mistaken quite,/ And laid the love-juice on some true lover’ssight:/ Of thy misprision must perforce ensue/ Some true love turn’d and not afalse turn’d true.” (3.2. 90). Following the earlier example, Oberon onlymerely scolds Puck even though he messed up his orders from Oberon, and putsthe juice on Demetrius’s eyes himself.
Oberon is above Puck, but ththey remainforgiving and understanding, which creates their friendship. Likewise, Bottomand Titania share a bond of contrast created by the love potion. The lovepotion is a symbol of powerful nature of love, which can lead to bizarre behaviourand cannot be resisited. Bottom is surprised by the fact that a fairy, likeTitania, would like him, and so he remarks, “Methinks, mistress, you shouldhave little reason for that: and yet, to say the truth, reason, and love keeplittle company together now-a-days;” (3.
1. 130-135). This shows the classdifference between the characters. This is because a relationship between acommon person and a royal person can be seen as very unusual.
And, a queen likeTitania would never fall in love with an ass-head. This was only possible as aresult of the magic potion. For instance, Titania turns into to someone whocannot judge appearances when she states. “I pray thee, gentle mortal, singagain:/ Mine ear is much enamour’d of thy note;/ So is mine eye enthralled tothy shape;/ And thy fair virtue’s force perforce doth move me/ On first view tosay, to swear, I love thee.” (3.1. 125-130).
In this case. Oberon’s love juicehas turned an intelligent queen into someone with no ability to judgeappearances. Titania’s and Bottom’s relationship shows that love and reasonkeep no company, which in their case is because of the class difference, created by the love potion.”A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, is a comedic play with themajor theme being love. Love can be interpreted differently for each couple, asit has such a broad meaning.
It can be seen as love’s difficulties withLysander and Hermia, as they cannot marry each other openly, and are distancedbecause of the loves potion. Oberon is the king of fairies, but has goodcompany with Puck. Likewise, Titania turned into someone with no ability to judgeappearances, and fell in love with an ass-head. In this way, you can see thevarious natures of love, and how there are different kinds of love. Inconclusion, love can be seen in different means for each couple in, “AMidsummer Night’s Dream”.
